I've been thinking about how many people, myself included, responded to Tracy Chapman's performance last night by crying. Why did we cry? What were we crying for? I'll answer my own question below, but I'm curious to hear why other people cried. 1/6

I think I cried because seeing her--hearing her--made me realize how much I had missed her. And because she was magnificent in every way. I think I cried at her majesty. And her integrity--which made me realize how much I missed that. 2/6

...a wave of sound, a gasp, that ripples through the audience, as (I think) they realize, "That's really her." And a third gasp when she begins singing and everyone, everyone knows it really is her. Oh, the sounds of that audience. They, too, are part of why I cry. 4/6

That sense of receiving something, someone, we need, and realizing they really are there, just as we need them. And we can be there for her, too. We see that in the moment, at the beginning of the performance, when she smiles. 5/6

I've been watching and re-watching video of the performance. There's a moment when she begins playing guitar when, it seems, some people in the audience recognize her but some don't. Then there's this second moment of realization. . . 3/6

A signature is a performative act, an utterance that makes something real. It can't simply be unspoken, erased, unmade. But other performative repetitions can layer on top of it--like, for example, apologies. "I apologize" is an excellent performative utterance.

I ran from Mareen Burgess Duvall in October 1807, and was able to evade him at least until the spring of 1808, and maybe longer. Duvall died in 1812 and had no enslaved people listed in his estate. I called myself SAM JOINTER.

The irony: there's an ethical, intellectually sound way to prevent faculty from forcing expenses on students. Just let students always choose btw buying required books OR reading them on library reserve. That is, fund libraries!

Yesterday we were notified by our University president that starting fall 2024 that we will no longer be allowed to assign any resources (books etc) in any class in an effort to reduce cost burden on students.
