I think the 2010s will be remembered and characterized as when everything went full corporate. The internet was consolidated into a small handful of sites and all media became data driven to a never before realized level. This paved the way for the 2020s, the age of AI slop.

There's no music during the firebombing scene in Grave of the Fireflies. There's no cinematic contrivances to make the scene more exciting or heart rending. It's eerily silent. Because that's what Takahata remembers from living through it as a child. The silence.

NHK documentary on August 2 about "Grave of the Fireflies" and 7 notebooks written by Isao Takahata that were found after his death. The film was based on a novel, but also on the director's personal experience, who fled the bombings with his sister. nhk.jp/p/etv21c/ts/M2…

Has the artist ever been identified? This was made in 2002 at the latest (still WWF, not WWE) so I'm guessing this was actually an artist from Japan or an unknown American artist with a better grasp of manga aesthetics than every single Amerimanga artist of that era.

At art school we had this figure drawing teacher that was notoriously hard to please. Strict academic type. SUPER STRONG FUNDAMENTALS. Students would show him their favorite modern artists & he'd go "meh." But when my buddy showed him Shinkawa he went "OK this guy is GOOD."

Unironically this. Not only is this the single funniest thing the Joker has ever done, it's also the best characterization I've ever seen of the Clown Prince of Crime, where he will always prioritize going for the laugh over saving his own life.
