    1. When we started this story we could never have imagined it would end like this. For months we filmed the trial of Gaylen Grandstaff, an American put in jail in #Russia over a cleaning product. Our new @ABC short film takes you inside what it was like. abcn.ws/2XteCxK

So Putin is now on TV explaining his justifications for the invasion of Ukraine to a room full of Russian trainee air stewardesses... Bizarre…

Another revealing video. Scene inside a mustering station in Russia where an officer yells at angry, resentful men who have been mobilized. “That’s it- playtime’s over. You’re soldiers now!”

For the last few days people have been trying desperately to get out of the towns north of Kyiv, fleeing heavy shelling and Russian troops. This woman, Tatiana Bogatova carried her 18 month year-old daughter for 20km on foot, through the night to reach the edge of the capital.

Unbelievable video. Russian officer telling newly mobilized men they will need to source their own sleeping bags, med packs. Tells them to go buy tampons from pharmacies to use as bandages. “The only thing the army gives you in uniforms, armor. That’s it.”

The Kremlin has announced its demands for ending the war in Ukraine: -Ukraine must change its constitution to guarantee it won't join any "blocs", i.e. NATO + EU. -Must recognise Crimea as part of Russia. -Must recognise the eastern separatist regions as independent.

Angry (and fearless) crowd confronting Russian troops in the occupied Ukrainian city of Energodar (home to the nuclear plant). A Russian soldier fires his rifle over his head but the crowd doesn’t flinch.

I just spoke to Petro Andrushenko an advisor to the mayor in Mariupol, the Ukrainian city where Russia said it was opening a humanitarian corridor. He said they have had to halt the evacuation because Russia shelled the agreed evac point where people were to gather.

We spent a couple days up on the Ukrainian side of the border with Kursk last week as Ukraine conducts its offensive into Russia. A few impressions. 🧵

Just arrived in Odessa— sounds of air defense going, several loud booms, fighter jet flying overhead. Day after Russia signed deal to allow grain ships to leave the city.

Remarkable clip of Russian state TV propaganda show where one guest gently brings up Russia’s retreat from Kyiv and suggests it may need to negotiate to keep territory it holds now. Everyone looks uneasy. One guest goes hysterical. Host: “But that would be victory for Ukraine”…

We talked today to a man who spent 100 days in the Russian prison camp where dozens of Ukrainian POWs were killed yesterday. Kostiantyn Velychko said there was widespread torture, daily beatings. They used to listen to screams of POWs.
