Local authorities have become drunk on power, using so-called Experimental (because they aren't) Traffic Regulation Orders to force through mass road closures - with almost no checks or balances to reign them in. We're calling on the @transportgovuk to bin them. #AbolishETROs

Oxford is now emerging as a UK centre of resistance against draconian schemes (also coming to cities) that would force residents and visitors to obtain council permission / permits to drive along the city's main roads. Hundreds have turned out to start the fightback.

From today's Telegraph... With apologies to the good folks of Bristol...let's hope this scheme is a spectacular and rapid failure, and puts a stop to this clearly bonkers idea once and for all - before an equivalent plan is rolled out in Oxford.

Confirmed: the tories will propose to remove the Cowley and East Oxford LTNs at next week's County Council meeting. They're calling for @OxfordshireLab1 to join them, and vote to overturn previous decisions to make the LTNs permanent. Do it, Labour. oxfordmail.co.uk/news/23892759.…

The complaints from Oxford's bus companies about the bad impact that the LTNs are having on their service has reached the national media. We're infamous. Again. Is it possible for a council to be put in special measures because of its transport policies?

There is arguably a parallel between the Post Office scandal and LTN restrictions. A powerful organisation implements a measure that is clearly not fit for purpose, and then spends years saying nothing is wrong with it - while claiming that those who suffer as a result are wrong.

Oxfordshire County Council in a nutshell. Pointless, ineffective new rain garden. Versus neglecting of basic maintenance (i.e. drain cleaning). Pavement impassible to pedestrians. Cyclists narrowly avoiding getting soaked. Within yards of each other. It'll be worse at night

Spin your way out of this one, @OxfordshireCC . How many more East Oxford businesses will have to shut before you accept* that LTNs mostly cause pain, for little or no measurable benefit. *we know you won't admit that, otherwise you wouldn't have made the Cowley LTNs permanent.

Yesterday, @LabourOxon could have voted to remove the LTNs, which have slowed peaktime buses from 12 to 3mph and made traffic far worse. Instead, they voted to reduce "congestion". In other words, you. Labour see you going to work, or visiting family and friends, as a problem.
