The United States Coast Guard has accepted ownership of the "commercially available polar #icebreaker", adding the first polar icebreaker to its fleet in 25 years.
Previously known as Aiviq, it will be renamed USCGC Storis (WAGB 21) upon commissioning.
If the US government was looking to acquire a nuclear-powered icebreaker, they would most likely propose one of their naval reactors or their derivatives. In such case, we could design the ship around a "black box" like was done with Taymyr and Vaygach.
I don't know about you, but to me a photograph of a nuclear-powered icebreaker under construction at a Finnish shipyard feels quite relevant in the context of Finland's ability to build large icebreakers.

#AISspotted what could be the first-ever Capesize bulk carrier heading towards the #NorthernSeaRoute? At 169k DWT and a draught of 17.8 metres, it may be one of the biggest vessels ever to attempt a transit. Ice class? Нет!

We supported the lead designer of the new Chilean #PolarClass5 Antarctic vessel Almirante Viel, @VardMarineInc, with #icebreaking hull form development, winterization and some specific ice class design solutions. We were also responsible for ice model tests in this project.

As the shipping season on the #NorthwestPassage draws to an end, it's time to summarize this year's transits. In total, there were 17 full transits by large ice-strengthened commercial ships, more than on any previous season. (1/10)
Today's "archive find" of the Finnish #icebreaker Otso is something I had already scanned years ago, but re-digitized this morning with with higher resolution.
I have a soft spot for those searchlight beams...
Interesting proposal from Adam Lajeunesse and Captain William Woityra: USCG should purchase or lease a Harry DeWolf-class #icebreaking Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPS) from Canada to strengthen #Arctic presence.

While we often focus on issues related to ice, grounding is also a serious risk in the notoriously little charted Arctic and Antarctic waters.
"The hydrographic data in the area consists of a single line of soundings with a wreck in the end."
#AISspotted the German polar research vessel Polarstern passing its Chinese counterpart Xue Long 2 in sight of each other just a hair under 85° N.
They are presently the northernmost ships in the world.

The smile of the shark-toothed Arktika-class nuclear-powered #icebreaker Yamal widens: service life of the twin-reactor power plant commissioned in 1992 has been extended from 150,000 to 200,000 hours.
