Tl;dr: Bye, Twitter! You can find me educating on TT & IG & my random thoughts on #Medsky. Just learned about the other app today; I’m making the leap w/o hesitation. My relationship with this app has been complicated politically, but also personally. After becoming a new mom &

In an acute visit, a patient seemingly out of nowhere said, “I know my weight is probably affecting this too.” I paused, “Actually, I don’t think this problem has anything to do with weight so I wasn’t going to bring it up, but I also don’t see weight as an indicator of health.”

Rotating on the peds trauma service, I met a Black young man who was shot in the abdomen. The word was it was “gang activity”. No one bothered to ask more questions. I walked in the room and saw a boy who was scared. He feared the outcomes of surgery and getting shot again. 1/

My job as a doctor doesnt give me the right to evaluate someone’s character or decisions; it requires that I support their thriving. As I remember my dear patient, I’m reminded to combat the systems that threaten our patients’ health over judging their individual actions. END

June is officially the sweetest month of 2023. My baby girl is here! ❤️ I’m excited for this new journey and seeing how it’ll shape my perspective & work. I felt so cared for and valued during my labor & delivery experience like every birthing person, esp Black folks, deserves.

I continued, “We can also do labs just to see if you’re at risk for things like diabetes, high cholesterol, and liver disease since it’s been awhile since those were checked.” “Sounds good, can I come to see you? I like you.” “Of course!” This is weight stigma-free practice!

“Doctors always seem to find a way to bring my weight up because it’s high…”, they explained. “…so you wanted to bring it up first so it hurts less?” I added. “Yeah”, they said. “I get that. Why don’t you come back so we can do a head to toe check-up and talk more?”

I explained I care more about behaviors, like nutrition and physical activity. I shared how people at lower weights can have significant health issues while people at higher weights can run marathons. “Weight alone doesn’t tell me much about your health.” They seemed relieved.

This teen, in a position of vulnerability, had to prove that he’s a “good kid.” I lacked the words to fight this battle with my attending. My interaction with him brutally reminded me how much society doesn’t trust or value Black boys. It broke me then and still does now. 6/

Got called a “f*cking b*tch” in my DMs this evening for the vaccine videos I made for the AAP. Reading those words directed to me was unsettling. Advocacy is rewarding most days, and some days are hard. The latter are reminders of why I only do work I genuinely believe in.

Outside, I recounted my heart-to-heart to my White male attending. “I just don’t trust him,” he said. Sensing my disappointment, he laughed “maybe I’ve just been here too long.” I was internally furious at this reminder that Black people are always expected to prove ourselves 5/

Spotted in the clinic: “This scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That’s it. It cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, life force, possibility, strength, or love.”
