- I have said it before, and will say it again: the people who are obsessed with the Middle Ages because they imagine it to have been a time of dep piety, reverence, and set gender roles would be absolutely appalled if they were magically transported back to medieval times.
- Replying to @nuttyridgeI told her "you're a good social critic. Welcome to a lifetime of making people uncomfortable."
- Replying to @BishopBarronI don't need to imagine anything more offensive; I can just look at the most recent report on decades of abuse of children covered up by church leaders.
- Replying to @RBrattenWeissIt would do them a world of good to read even a few pieces of peer-reviewed historical literature about medieval culture, or some of the texts that were actually written during that era.
- Replying to @RBrattenWeissLike honestly just a high school level Great Books education could disabuse them of their fantasies. Freaking Chaucer for crying out loud. You don't have to be a medievalist to know this stuff.
- Replying to @WSpeculationBut look how modern assumptions about capitalism inadvertently reinforce arguments that slavery was not so bad!
- Replying to @nmsanchez and @AOCAnyone who identifies AOC as a "radical leftist" has automatically disqualified themselves for engagement in coherent political discourse. Her policies would be viewed as centrist and mainstream in the European nations that consistently outrank the US in quality of life.
- Replying to @RBrattenWeissJust a little bit of the Divine Comedy would help them out immensely. (Incidentally, Dante was a huge proponent of the vernacular but he also spent a lot of time in the Commedia lashing out at the bad behavior of the clergy and princes of the church).
- Replying to @RBrattenWeiss @nmsanchez and @AOCAnd denigrating her as "stupid" or "ditzy" just showcases their fear and ignorance. Reminiscent of the sort of person who says climate science is wrong because it's snowing right now. They're too dim to get it, so they assume it, not them, must be ignorant. A facet of privilege.
- I'm her teacher, and we'd just been discussing how the history books misrepresent past events to make our nation look better. We quit a Xtian curriculum because of all the imperialism, but wow this crap is seemingly unavoidable!
- Replying to @TinaBeattiePart of the issue is that there is not just one "medieval civilization" but various different cultures and eras overlapping under that one umbrella. And all of them far more complex and sophisticated than either extreme admits.
- If you voted for Trump, you don't get to share your family's immigration stories. Don't talk up your hard-working grandfather or tell apocryphal tales of "names changed at Ellis Island." You would have turned your ancestors away and sent them back to whatever they were fleeing.
- Replying to @AAJDeVille1People do it with the Victorian era, and with the 1950s, also. And ancient Rome. So silly.
