#OnThisDay Archibald Hill died. He was a British #physiologist for his elucidation of the production of heat and mechanical work in muscles. His research helped establish the origin of muscular force in the breakdown of carbohydrates with formation of lactic acid in the muscle.

#OnThisDay in 1935 John Gibbon successfully maintained the cardiac & respiratory function of a cat using his invention - the 1st heart-lung machine. 18yrs later he successfully performed the 1st open-heart op, showing that an artificial device can temporarily mimic heart function
