Writing is hard work, you're co-constructing new knowledge, interrogating its meaning and devising ways to explain your thinking to others. It's vulnerable but vital work and you don't have to be alone while you do it. πŸ‘‡πŸ½πŸ‘‡πŸΏπŸ‘‡πŸΎ

Recent tweets have shared news of academic colleagues whose death by suicide occurred amid the insurmountable pressure they experienced in higher education. Our mental health is important. We need to collectively challenge harmful work environments and name abuse when we see it

Completing a PhD shouldn't be privileged, we should live in a world where we are nurtured to learn rather than conditioned for capitalism If you're struggling this #phdweekend let go of any guilt that you should be working at your thesis. Instead find space to nurture it & you ❀

We often hear that writing is hard because we look down at our feet for most of it as the summit isn't in sight. Remember you're cultivating new knowledge & adding to our understanding of the world. That's monumental.... So go easy on yourself - even celebrate #phdweekend

DM: I’m 48 and considering starting a self funded PhD. Luckily, being older, I’m financially secure but I’m concerned I’ve left it too late! Does anyone have any experiences they can share of doing their PhD later in life?

Ultimately, whatever personal or professional challenge you are currently facing, you can overcome this. The times when life is a struggle can be difficult to experience, but it will pass. Some days you might feel isolated, but you're always surrounded by those who wish you well.

DM: I’m a 3rd yr PhD. I started dating my girlfriend about five months ago. I met her parents recently and they think I should be working and making money. They think I don’t have the drive to achieve and my PhD is useless. I’m honestly so bothered by this. What should I do?

Some people who work in academia have become lifelong friends who share collaborative values and a desire to contribute to the world. However, HE is also where bullying thrives, where narcissists can act out Machiavellian assaults not only without retribution but with promotion!
