EXCL: A gay man in Qatar reveals he was lured to a hotel room through a dating app, and when he arrived Qatari officials were there waiting for him. They raped him one by one, arrested him and deported him. And he’s not alone. LGBT people are being hunted.

It’s horribly telling that, so often, as soon as a woman realises you’re gay you can sense a reduction in hyper-vigilance. The threat level has fallen. I often find myself making my gayness very clear ASAP for this reason. I don’t know if straight men realise the extent of this.

As Elton John sings I’m Still Standing all I can think is what a miracle that is, that he’s raised over $600million for HIV/AIDS, and therefore how many people are still alive - still standing - because of him.

Just been at a hate crime event with the Met police + they told me something really useful. If you’re on a bus + you witness a hate crime, if you give the police the number on the back of your Oyster/debit card, they can trace the bus + every passenger on it to find the culprit.

So one of the best (if not the best) thing about being gay is the ability to have close friendships with women. I’ve felt this my whole life. Girls at school knew I was no threat so we could be close. It’s the same now. But this is a result of male violence. It’s all horrifying.

Had to turn down an interview on @bbc5live because they were going to have a proponent of conversion therapy on. Ofcom rules demand *due* not total impartiality. The medical profession has concluded: conversion therapy is harmful. No one who promotes it should be given airtime.

"We're not transphobic, we just think you're a danger to children, women, society, lesbians, gay men, feminism, yourselves, and should be excluded from everywhere we decide you shouldn't be, and should be denied treatment, demonised, pathologised, ridiculed + debated endlessly."

How interesting. Because at the time I supplied the government with a list of 250 LGBT Afghans desperately needing to escape and I was told it wasn’t possible.

10 years ago a woman came up to me at an awards ceremony. “I’m Deborah,” she said. We clicked immediately. We got drunk, gossiping and laughing for hours. I loved her. We got in a cab to go to a party, she leant over and said, “I’ve just found out I have breast cancer.” /1

I’ve finally booked our wedding. Finally, not only because of Covid delays, and not just because it took 40 yrs to find the right person, but because for the first 36 yrs of my life it wasn’t legal, and growing up, not even a remote possibility. I can barely believe it’s real. 🏳️‍🌈

Today is very strange for me. The government has announced it'll ban conversion therapy. 9 years ago I subjected myself to it, going undercover to investigate conversion therapists. No UK journalist had done this before. No one knew what was going on. This is what I learned. 1/

My mother says she knew I was gay when I was 5. I knew when I was 12. People don’t just turn gay in adulthood. They feel different and often know they’re LGBT at school. They deserve to know they’re not alone, that they’re ok. If you say nothing, you harm them. Silence kills.

Most people have no idea what it was like to be young + gay in the 80s/90s. When straight friends were holding hands in the playground I was in gay bars where there were guys in wheelchairs with KS on their faces. The 1st man I fell for had AIDS. That was my adolescence. #ItsASin
