I think there are some people in my audience who could use a quick history lesson. I believe it will help clarify some important things. Likely most of what you know about "The Irish Potato Famine" is propaganda meant to conceal an intentional genocide.

If you are Irish American like me, you probably had to do a report on your family's immigration history. The answer to why your family came here was probably "the potato famine" drove your ancestors to leave, because there was no food. This is at best a half truth.

The Great Hunger– as it is more accurately referred to these days– had a few factors driving it. One of them *was* a crop famine. At the time Ireland was under heavy colonial oppression. With British investment exploiting Irish labor.

Tons of crops were grown in Ireland in 1845. It's a famously green place. Grain, livestock, and yes potatoes were all a part of Irish agriculture. Potatoes are of note because that was the subsistence crop for the laborer farmer class. Nutritious and easy to grow.

The truly galling thing about all of this is that there was still food *within Ireland.* Food that was the property of British investors that could have been diverted to mitigate the crisis. Instead it was exported to defend Britain's capital interests.

Ireland was an important agricultural asset for the UK, but they had other assets. They *could* have stepped in to prevent people from dying about it. They didn't. Intentionally.

But in 3rd grade all you learned about was the potato famine. A real and awful thing that happened. However the horrors that drove your ancestors from their homes were designed by human beings. The Great Hunger was something that could only happen if people allowed it to happen.

All this was on the heels of hundreds of years of colonial oppression. An outlawing of the Catholic religion, and outlawing of the Irish Gaelic language, a smothering and destruction of native culture. Those 400,000 deaths were not an accident.
