The NCAA released their transfer portal data on DI & DII student-athletes. A few quick takeaways: ▪️Full-rides are rare, very rare at all levels ▪️35% of DI male S-A in the portal are not receiving any athletic aid. 22% of women were not. 1/

👎🏽🗣️ Disheartened by the growing norm: parents behaving terribly at sporting events. In the past year, I've encountered more disrespect from parents than from student-athletes in my last 7 years as AD. Tonight, a visiting parent went on a vulgar rant, yelling at me just a few

Finally… 🔘 If I was the parent of a high school student-athlete that wants to compete in college athletics, I’m advising them to find the right fit, not focus on what is highest profile. Transferring can be really hard on young people and a financial burden long-term as well.

4️⃣ years as an AD, 4️⃣ important things I’ve learned: ▫️Be transparent, it builds trust. ▫️Be honest w/ guidance & feedback, ask for it too. No1 gets better w/o it. ▫️Over-communicate or negativity fills cracks. ▫️Empower & cultivate growth in leaders. Creates culture warriors.

In our 1st week back I’ve learned student-athletes: ▪️Are willing to make social changes to get back to a sense of normal ▪️Mental health was impacted far more than I thought from spring cancellations ▪️Desire for an in-person education was greater than I thought #returntoplay

▪️Many of these S-A’s are finding homes in the NAIA for better balance in life & continued high-level competition. Mental health was the top reason associated with DI & DII student-athletes leaving. Smaller schools that compete at a high level can be ideal destinations. 3/3

▪️Nearly half of the DI transfers from 2022 ended up NOT transferring to a NCAA school. 🤯 ▪️500+ DI MBB players in the portal never found another NCAA opportunity. There are simply more student-athletes in the portal than opportunities. 2/

A great coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. A great player can accept that correction without being offended. 📈#GrowthMindset
