Some time in the works, The Many Paths of Change in International Law, edited with @ezgiyyildiz, has just come out. It's become a really nice volume, just the right read for rainy November days (sunny ones as well). And it will be open access! global.oup.com/academic/produ…

Spain's electoral board has excluded @KRLS, @toni_comin and @ClaraPonsati from the European elections without any legal basis, as would happen in Turkey, Belarus or Venezuela: political opposition is simply outlawed. This will not stand in European courts.

Spain defies the UN. Today the investigating judge at the Supreme Court has rejected the request of @jordialapreso to stand for election as president of the Generalitat, in blatant disregard of interim measures of the UN Human Rights Committee. A disgrace. lavanguardia.com/politica/20180…

This morning visiting Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Turull, political prisoners for 14 and 8 months already. Still unbelievable in Western Europe. The struggle for the human rights of persecuted Catalan activists continues in 2019.

Spain cannot handle questions on its illiberalism and human rights abuses with respect to Catalonia - for good reasons: it just doesn't have answers that would convince anyone outside of Spain. Let's hope people will keep asking these questions ever more forcefully.
Josep Borrell, Spain's Foreign Minister, walks out of an interview with @dwnews because of uncomfortable questions on Catalonia, constitutional reform, and human rights violations in the Spanish Judicial System. It's worth watching the full interview: dw.com/en/josep-borre…

The European Parliament makes itself the tool of the repressive policies of the Spanish state. At some point even the most Europeanist has to begin doubting whether we have the right institutions. catalannews.com/politics/item/… via @catalannews

A former Spanish police inspector confirms that the Spanish secret service knew about plans for the 2017 attack in Barcelona but did not intervene "to give Catalonia a bit of a scare" during the referendum campaign. This is state terrorism.

The Spanish parliament has suspended the Catalan politicians arbitrarily in pre-trial detention for their role in the peaceful referendum. This is an assault on democracy and the rights of voters, unlawful under international human rights law.

The UN Human Rights Committee has asked Spain to "take all necessary measures" for @jordialapreso to exercise his political rights. Spain violates international law if it prevents him from being elected. The government and @InesArrimadas need to accept the real rule of law.

Bending the law until it breaks. In a clearly illegal move, the Spanish Supreme Court blocks elected member of the EP @junqueras from joining the European Parliament. If this is allowed, where is the limit of democratic backsliding, in Spain and beyond?

The UN Human Rights Committee has today asked Spain to "take all necessary measures to ensure that Mr Jordi Sanchez i Picanyol can exercise his political rights". This is exceptional. Now Spanish courts can no longer bar Jordi Sanchez from being elected! shr.gs/IMcFU7I

Sometimes you’re still shocked by things you should have expected. Spain’s foreign ministry, faced with a damning report from the Council of Europe, simply pretends the report says the opposite. Not just cheap propaganda but active misinformation, Putin-style by @AranchaGlezLaya

How can a hunger strike be necessary in a Western European country? Spanish courts keep peaceful independence leaders locked in pre-trial detention for more than a year, and the constitutional court delays the complaint. Justice delayed is justice denied.

If ⁦@Europarl_EN⁩ lifts the immunity of @KRLS Puigdemont and other Catalan MEPs, it is complicit in the human rights violations committed by Spanish courts against independence activists, as found, e.g., by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention
