What's going on in City Hall? What's the London Mayor up to now? Subscribe to Neil's City Hall Diary and find out!
Now in refreshing new Substack flavour:
1985: work starts on DLR
1987: finished and open to passengers
Two years from start to finish - 13km of track, multiple viaducts, 15 stations, 11 trains, plus a depot at Poplar.
But in the year of our Lord 2025, it takes one whole year to install new escalators in one station.
Cutty Sark station will be closed from Sat 31 May 2025 until spring 2026.
This is because we're installing four new energy-efficient escalators at Cutty Sark station to improve your journeys.

Mayor Khan says he won't do pay per mile. But he also says he's still committed to his Net Zero 2030 plan which "requires" pay per mile to reduce traffic by 27%. So which is it? I tried to get some sense out of him today.
I have no shortage of criticisms of Mayor Khan as regular viewers will know, but he is not an Islamist, he is not in the pockets of Islamists, and I completely disagree with anyone who says otherwise.
The Winsor Report raised important concerns about Sadiq Khan's behaviour leading to the former Met Commissioner’s departure. Today I have voted to formally summons him and I look forward to quizzing him on this matter #TheSadiqSummons
People wonder "why care so much about economic growth?" What does everyone having £10k per year extra per year actually look like?
Compare how much the economy creates per person each year:
Indiana, USA: £41,500
UK: £31,793
And here's an Indiana high school:
I've just asked the Mayor what he suggests people in Croydon and Sutton do if they can't afford his £12.50 daily ULEZ charge, can't afford a new car, and can't get to work by public transport.
Labour's response was that it's "only" about £3k for a compliant car - just buy one.
This tweet explains it simply.

"Pemex is a state owned oil company created by the seizure, nationalisation and expropriation of all private oil companies in Mexico in 1938 by decree of former revolutionary general Cárdenas..."
I've just looked through weeks of Neville's twitter and although it's packed with politics, I couldn't see one single word about human rights abuse in Qatar. So where exactly is he doing this "highlighting"?
The 15 min city doesn't remind me of a conspiracy theory but rather the perennial urban planner dream of the "urban village".
It sounds nice so urban planners are repeatedly drawn to it. But it doesn't work: it ignores how cities, and the people in them, actually work.
Exhibit A
Pakistan is part of the Commonwealth family of nations which all have their flag flown from Westminster Abbey on their national day to symbolise the bonds of friendship among the Commonwealth. For Pakistan this is 23rd March. Don't get suckered in by the racist rage farmers.
The Government has asked all public buildings to fly the Israeli flag and use appropriate coloured lighting to mark yesterday's terrorist attack and show solidarity with its victims. I can confirm this will include City Hall from 8pm this evening. 🇮🇱🕯️
A woman has been ejected from the Mayor's Cost of Living event after asking Sadiq about the impact of ULEZ on people who can't afford to pay it.
Martin Lewis chimes in to agree that it's going to hit people hard at exactly the worst time. Everyone can see this except the Mayor.
Sadiq Khan never intended to listen to London over ULEZ. Documents released today show he manipulated the results and made false and dishonest statements to cover it up. This is unacceptable behaviour #TheULEZScandal
🚨 NEW: Sadiq Khan made false and dishonest statements to the London Assembly, and manipulated the ULEZ consultation results by improperly excluding thousands of responses.
200+ pages of internal emails and documents have been released today, exposing the truth. #TheULEZScandal
