Last night when I got back to EMS headquarters at the end of my shift there was a group of 40-60 people, mostly young adults assembled in a parking lot/loading area directly across from where we return our vehicles.
No distancing, no masks.

So maybe what we really need is for everyone to just take a step back and remember that we’re all tired.
And we’re all scared. For a lot of reasons.
Because we really need to just take care of each other right now.
We really just do.

I have 2 boys.
An 8 year old in grade 3 and a 10 year old in grade 4.
This afternoon my wife and I sat them down and told them we needed to have a talk.

There’s no not clumsy way to say this so I’m just gonna spit it out.
Thank you to all of the First Nations speaking out against separation and yet again, saving settlers from our own damn selves.

Ok wait…
The guy who posted a video of himself literally shitbombing his own people is upset someone quoted Reagan and made him look bad?
This timeline…
My last tweet of 2021…
I’m a paramedic.
I spend time in a world where triage is something that we deal with every day.
I never would have imagined that I would be witnessing the triaging of an entire society in my lifetime though.

My kid had multiple COVID+ exposures at school this week.
I now have a sore throat & a cough.
I’m a paramedic on quarantine now, which means I can’t go to work when my province needs me.
But kids somehow don’t need more protections in schools because it’s low impact.

I was born and raised in Alberta.
I have lived in rural Albert and Urban Alberta.
I am raising my family in Alberta.
But I am, and always will be Canadian first.

Anger is combustible.
You can use it as a fuel, but if you let it take control it can consume you.
We are in dark times right now.
But maybe we all need to also remember to take a step back from letting our anger consume us.

As an Albertan, I now have to contend with attacks on my country from south of the border…
But also from within my own province by the Premier of Alberta.
It is offensive to me that she believes she can dictate what the country does.
Imagine if other provinces did?

So here’s my ask...
Be uncomfortable.
Talk to your kids.
Be honest, not afraid.
And do not allow this to be yet another example where the settlers fretted for a few days, did what was comfortable for them and then moved on.

Moral of the story?
Things are bad right now. People are scared, and it seems like there’s a lot of people being unnecessarily shortsighted, selfish and cruel.
But damn if there aren’t still a lot of wonderful people who make this province a beautiful place.

I’ve been an Albertan all my life.
I grew up in a small town.
I live in a city now.
I know this province has a LOT of work to do to get to where we need to be.
I never thought we would be where we are today.
Terrorism?
Calls for insurrection?
This is fucking embarrassing.
