⛳️ FORMER KHSAA STAR LYDIA (GUMM) LASPRILLA NAMED HEAD COACH FOR ALABAMA WOMEN ⛳️
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Lydia (Gumm) Lasprilla, a former North Hardin High School standout and one of the most accomplished girls golfers in Kentucky history, has been named head women's golf coach at the University of Alabama, the school announced Saturday.
"I am so honored to be named the head women's golf coach at The University of Alabama," Lasprilla said in a statement released by Alabama Athletics. "The tradition, the brand and the university are very special. I am looking forward to building a winning culture and winning championships for years to come."
Lasprilla, a Radcliff native and North Hardin graduate, earned All State honors 10 times, was named Miss Kentucky Golf six times, qualified for the KHSAA State Tournament as a third grader, set a Kentucky record for rounds in the 60s and was inducted into the 5th Region Hall of Fame in 2016.
She arrives in Tuscaloosa after leading the University of Houston women's golf program through the most successful period in school history. During her five seasons as head coach, the Cougars advanced to four consecutive NCAA Regionals and reached the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history this spring.
Houston finished the 2025-26 season ranked No. 27 nationally and placed 20th at the NCAA Championships. Lasprilla compiled 25 top five team finishes during her tenure and coached multiple all conference performers.
"We are excited to welcome Lydia Lasprilla as the next head coach of Alabama Golf," Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. "She is a rising star in the sport of women's golf and has proven herself as a championship caliber coach."
Houston Vice President for Athletics Eddie Nuñez thanked Lasprilla for her contributions to the Cougars program.
"We are grateful to Lydia for her dedication to our program," Nuñez said. "As an assistant coach and then the head coach, she worked tirelessly to elevate our program, capped by this season's appearance at the NCAA Championships."
Before entering coaching, Lasprilla competed at Florida State, where she earned All ACC honors twice and helped the Seminoles win six tournaments. She later served on the coaching staffs at Louisville and Houston before being promoted to the Cougars' head coaching position in 2021.
Lasprilla succeeds retiring Alabama coach Mic Potter and becomes one of the highest profile coaching hires in college golf from Kentucky's high school ranks in recent years.
