📢COVER REVEAL📢 It's finally here! 40 hours of work and some very sore hands but I'm SO proud of how this cover turned out! 19th century sapphic coal miner rescues an air sprite stuck in a human's body. Out October 27th. Pre-orders and ARC sign up is open now! 🔗below
Book cover in an art nouveau style with the title: The Turbulent Appearance of Brise Collier by Natalie Kelda and features two women in dynamic poses, one at the top right is reaching down towards the other at the bottom left who’s reaching up towards the flying woman. The flying woman has white-blonde hair and is wrapped in a partially sheer robe in pale blues and pinks. The woman falling at the bottom left wears Georgian clothes in dark earthy colours and has brown hair. Behind them is a winter-barren tree with lumps of snow on the branches. Blue swirls move between the tree’s branches.

The obsession with first lines/chapters having to be action packed and hook-y is limiting the success of so many beautiful, introspective books. Allow stories to be slow and thoughtful again!

Should I tell him I worked 12 hour days for 2 years in outback Australia? That I carried sheep, herded cattle and worked with horses in the 50C scorching sun? I spent my free time jumping off quad bikes to try and catch crocodiles? And I went on 5k runs every evening too...
Tweet screenshot from @artemisminion: women cannot do grueling labor in the heat because they are only half as strong, bones are not as durable, have less lung capacity, process oxygen in their blood less efficiently, skeleton is specialized for pregnancy not athletics, etc. that is just factual and is no one’s fault

Does anybody outside of Yorkshire know what "have a gander" or "fancy a mooch down town" means? I'm trying to determine how much context to add 🙈 (I'm avoiding written accents in my cosy historical—the Lilje Damselfly novel—to keep it "mainstream" but dialect is sneaking in)

I don't understand how it's legal? Does the US not have specific requirements and tests homeschooled kids need to do? Subjects that have to be covered etc? Kids need to be taught certain things to be able to participate meaningfully in society.

I'm sorry but WHAT THE FUCK?! Yes, we abso-fucking-lutely have a right to be upset if our words are stolen and used for training AI. There's a bloody reason copyright laws exist.

Text: Y'all only produce your books because the series of events in your life forces it out of you. Your book is nothing but a universal dice roll. You shouldn't have a monopoly on that information just because it generated out of your brain in particular.

I'll get hunted down but I think new writers who plot heavily often lack character interiority bc they get too focused on getting their characters into planned scenes w/o *listening* to their characters. It's a tough skill and one you can only hone by doing some pantsing imo. 1/3

You can have strong characters & a solid plot, but readers won’t connect w/ your story if it’s missing this key element—& many stories are. This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in fiction writing (& one of the most common elements I discuss w/ writers as an editor): 🧵

What is it with writers always moaning about how much they hate the writing process? Am I the only one who LOVES writing? Sure, there are tough days where I push through or need a break but I can't think of anything I hate about the process of writing a book.

Would you still write if you already had a wildly popular book and you'd made all the money you could ever want?

I lived with a guy like this(during lockdown 😭). Flat mate mind you, but he'd flip out over *everything* and call me names. He asked we only get lemon scented toilet bleach bc he had scent sensitivities. I bought one but it *was the wrong brand* he had a complete meltdown. 1/3

If you have access to the internet there's this incredible free thing called FAN FICTION. You can read it all day every day for free without destroying small indie authors' livelihood by stealing our books and sticking them on pirate sites so the Zon closes our account...
Tweet text screenshot: every time that 🏴‍☠️discourse comes about im just amazed at how many people are unable to look past their privilege to understand that not everyone has access to libraries or buying books, and that books should not be gatekept for people with a certain financial status

Moral: don't mollycoddle your kids regardless of special needs. Treat them with respect+love but set firm boundaries. Teach them about compassion for others. They need to learn they should state their needs clearly, and it's NOT okay to scream if someone tries but gets it wrong.

I've lived with several other autistics who were like this. It's usually the ones who are mollycoddled by family. They are the absolute worst people to live with when you're also autistic but the "take everything without complaint" kind of autistic. 2/3
