    The great Bob Fulton has passed away this week at the age of 101. I only got to know him during the last decade of his life, and those years alone could fill up the pages of a wonderfully surreal biography. Bob was larger than life. 1/

    Very sad news today. John Keenan has passed away at 83, after a short illness. His career at Rolls Royce East Kilbride began in his teens as an apprentice where he became a shop steward and eventually a respect convener.

    48 years ago this week, Bob Fulton, a shop steward at Rolls Royce East Kilbride in Scotland found at his station the Avon engine he was working on to be from Chile. Avon engines powered Hawker Hunter jets, the most exported British-made aircraft at the time. (Photo: John McCann)

    Here's to the wonderful Robert Somerville, who sadly has moved on, aged 85. Also known as Bobby, Papa or Mr Netherdale (after the youth club of the same name he founded in Motherwell), he was a beloved great-grandfather, a loving husband to Jean and a legendary shop steward.

    On this day 50 years ago, Bob Fulton refused to repair the Chilean Air Force engine at his work desk in protest against General Pinochet's military coup six months earlier. The engine powered Hawker Hunter jets, which had been used on the day of the coup to bomb Santiago.

    He was the Scottish trade unionist and force of nature of the anti-fascist movement. At Rolls Royce East Kilbride in 1974, his defiant and principled refusal to work on Pinochet’s aircraft engines grounded the majority of Chile’s Air Force, during the dictatorship. 2/
