🧵On September 29, I joined @theNCI as its 18th director. Cancer research is advancing rapidly, from immunotherapy to early detection and data-driven tools. I’m honored to serve the American public by building on this progress with teams at NCI and across the cancer community.

At an @theNCI town hall with staff this morning, I shared that I’ve been very recently diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative early #BreastCancer. My prognosis is very favorable. To anyone with cancer today: I am truly in this together with you. #bcsm

I am thrilled to begin my work at @theNCI today. With President Biden’s passion and commitment to the Cancer Moonshot, the opportunities to partner across the cancer community to improve the outlook for people with cancer are unprecedented.

I have decided to step down from my position as the National Cancer Institute Director, effective April 29th. Working at @theNCI has been the highlight of my career. I am honored to have had the chance to serve my country alongside so many talented scientists and administrators.

Today is my last day at NCI and this is my last post from this account. Serving as NCI Director has been an honor and the highlight of my career. I am committed to #EndCancerAsWeKnowIt and our paths will cross again. So, I’m not saying goodbye, but “until we meet again.” - Ned

Tony so articulately states what we are all thinking.

As Hollywood celebrates excellence in the film industry with the #Oscars, I’d like to give a shout out to the U.S. cancer research workforce. They’re more likely to be in lab coats than tuxedos and gowns, but make no mistake about it—they are stars. #cancerworkforce #NCIFuture

Put simply, I hate cancer. The pain of lost patients and devastated families drives me to improve how we develop interventions and deliver #CancerCare for all. We must challenge conventional thinking and remove arbitrary restrictions. #CancerResearch #CancerMoonshot

Cancer diagnoses are sharply down during the pandemic, but cancer incidence is not. This suggests we’ll see delayed diagnosis and upstaging, which could mean worse outcome. Let’s all agree to not let that happen.
Nice @BostonGlobe article from @GlobeLizK about @BIDMChealth study on decreases in MI/CVA/cancer diagnoses in the #COVID19 era, with a quote from yours truly about what we are already seeing with respect to some later presentations of heme malignancies bostonglobe.com/2020/05/18/nat…

(1/3) Change is good, but bittersweet. It is difficult for me to say goodbye to @theNCI family as I head to @FDA to serve as acting commissioner. Rest assured that our shared goals for patients and the public’s health will translate into my new duties.

For decades, Alex Trebek has enlightened and educated the nation through Jeopardy. By courageously sharing his diagnosis and raising awareness about pancreatic cancer, he continues to serve the public. Thank you, Alex. You are a national treasure.

We @theNCI are thinking of @SenJohnMcCain and family as he transitions from medical treatment into the care of loved ones. We are inspired by his compassion and bravery and grateful for the many years of public service.
