- I've added a map page to my dataviz on COVID-19 genomic sequencing data. Here I've used it to visualise the spread of the new XBB.1.5 "Kraken" lineage around the world. github.com/Mike-Honey/cov…
00:00 - The ABS' Provisional Mortality statistics have been updated, up to March 2023. These are the COVID-19 deaths. Each individual death is represented by a single point. Can spot the point where "hybrid immunity" kicks in? 🧵
- I missed this milestone recently - I just passed 3 years of churning out COVID variant analysis charts and maps from this project. Wondering whether it will continue to be useful for another 3 years ... It probably will.I've been collecting genomic sequencing data from a few sources on COVID-19 variants, trying to present it all in a consistent, clean style. Here's the latest charts, data and code, backed by an interactive dataviz - just click on any chart. github.com/Mike-Honey/cov…
- Data I was analysing on outbreak clusters from Victoria in late 2021 confirmed that schools were the source of far more clusters of cases than everywhere else combined. Henry is right: improving ventilation in schools would have a big impact. 1/We may be thinking about Covid the wrong way. It remains true it seems that Covid is an overdispersed virus. It has a low dispersion parameter (k), meaning most spread is superspreading events from a very small number of people. /1 bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
- This AFL season, I've been struck by how many mentions of "illness" there have been. I assume most of these are COVID cases, and here's an analysis that confirms that assumption. For 2024 (so far), mentions of illness are around 850% higher than the pre-COVID baseline. #AFL 🧵
- I'm excited to announce that I've been granted access to a detailed database covering all COVID-19 cases in Australia. It Includes: - cases & tests by date and location, down to LGA/postcode, updated daily - genomic sequencing data for all cases I will be posting more shortly.
- Here's the latest variant picture for Ireland. The new EG.5.* "Eris" variant (58%) has been rising rapidly, bursting clear of the usual "XBB soup" variants. This is the highest EG.5.* frequency I've seen anywhere. More details: aus.social/@mike_honey_/1…
- Here's the latest picture for the new BA.2.75 sub-lineage (nickname: "Centaurus") - an evolutionary jump from BA.2. It has most commonly been detected in India, showing extremely rapid growth to 18% of recent samples. It is also spreading rapidly to other countries. 🧵
- Here are Excess Deaths for Australia, comparing 2015-2019 against 2020 onwards. Each individual excess death is represented by a single point, spread out across the weeks and years. 🧵
00:00 - An analysis of cumulative COVID-19 deaths per capita shows Australia clearly led the commonly compared countries (NZ, USA, UK, Canada, Singapore) for the second half of 2022. Singapore's death rate was 5X lower than Australia's.
- Here's a new dataviz that illustrates the magnitude of COVID-19 fatalities in Australia. Each individual death is represented by a single point, mapped out across the various months and years of the pandemic. aus.social/@mike_honey_/1…
