🚨Big Personal News🚨
After 17 years at Northwestern, I will be leaving to take a new role at the NIH (Respiratory Disease Branch Chief).
As you can imagine, it was a difficult decision.

- We have our first COVID-19 breakthrough despite Evusheld. We definitely need approaches to collect this data in real time as it may inform efficacy of this new preventative therapy.
- Day 1 down - lots of new systems to learn but energized to be at NIH!
- Time to get my badge and start the next phase of my career.
- Today was my last clinic - for the last 17 years (nearly 900 clinics), I’ve had the honor of caring for countless patients - getting them ready for transplant and caring for them after.
- Look at hospitals - 100% mask mandate that is actually enforced. Also a place with many high risk patients and always indoor. No reports of outbreaks and data from ours and other hospitals suggest most cases in employees were of community origin.Places around the world that used masks consistently have had half to two-thirds less Covid spread. Imagine how many deaths could have been prevented in the US if the federal government had focused on masks rather than hydroxychloroquine.
- Honored to be selected to be the next editor-in-chief of @TheTxIDjournal. So thankful to Bob Rubin, Hans Hirsch and @FranciscoMarty_ for their incredible leadership to establish this critical journal for our community.
- This is a useful resource for finding locations that have Evusheld, Paxlovid and Molnupirivir. Can filter by state and drug to refine your information! healthdata.gov/Health/COVID-1…
- So as we see more and more rebound after Paxlovid, some with documented transmissions after the rebound, and @pfizer reporting ~$22B in profit - what is being done to understand and correct the issue? How often does it happen? Do we need longer therapy or combos?
- My view for the last 17 years - coming to an end in 21 days!
