Reminder: Giants had a signed & sealed deal to move to St Petersburg/Tampa, but MLB owners stepped in, nixed the deal, then forced Giants’ owner Bob Lurie to sell the team to a local group for a lower price & keep team in SF. The owners could do the same with A’s. If they care.

If the NHL doesn’t find a way to turn this into a reality TV show, the league’s marketing execs should be fired.

I don’t care what NBA lovers say, hockey playoffs are a level above hoops playoffs. Joe Pavelski just scored the Sharks’ first goal of the postseason with a puck off his face. Are you kidding me?

For a team trying to rehabilitate a culture, this stuff matters. Thornton & Marleau could be at the beach with their kids today & no one would complain. Instead, they’re at the @SanJoseSharks development camp working with draft picks.

Here’s how: I again remind people that 10 years ago, San Jose had downtown property for an A’s ballpark purchased, an EIR completed & a naming rights sponsor secured, only to have the Giants & MLB kill the deal. A’s could still be in the Bay, playing there today. Instead . . .
This whole A’s saga just doesn’t seem right..baseball always prided itself on doing what is best for the game..if so how did they let the Oakland situation get to this? Seriously you’d probably have to go back to the 1800’s to see such a travesty of handling a baseball team..

This is where I again remind that MLB could’ve kept the A’s in the Bay by allowing them a move to San Jose, NorCal’s largest city in its richest county, after SJ had secured ballpark land & passed an EIR. Instead, the Giants squashed the deal with Manfred’s assent. Congrats, MLB.
Moving the A’s to Las Vegas feels like a decision that will be regretted.

My last Mercury News column. Thanks to all who read even one of them over the years:

True Fact: San Jose State has now won as many football games in Las Vegas this season as the Las Vegas Raiders.

A macro picture: This ends the Golden Era of Bay Area sports, which lasted from 1965 to today. With the exit of both the Raiders & A's, winners of multiple titles, plus dissolution of the Pac 12 around Stanford & Cal, ending annual West Coast rivalries we're in a less fun place.

And you really ever wondered why the Giants worked so hard to keep the A’s from moving to San Jose? This was always the reason. The Giants played the long game and won.

Thank you, Kevin Youklis, for the money quote: “I still think it’s a major mistake that they didn’t go to San Jose.” Also appreciate him calling out the Giants for being the roadblock. All true. I need to go by his Los Gatos restaurant/brewery and toast him.

In 40 years of covering the NFL, here’s what I saw some people do during the National Anthem: Talk, buy & drink beer, do their business in restrooms, curse opposing players, take selfies, not remove caps, eat hot dogs. In my eyes, kneeling in peaceful protest is more respectful.

A Vietnamese immigrant billionaire, out of nowhere, has donated millions to San Jose's flood victims. I'll let that sentence speak for itself.
Here's the big moment. Hoang hands San Jose Mayor @sliccardo a $5 million check. Mayor says 100 percent of money will go to victims.
