The loss of Steller's sea cow is surely one of the most frustrating cases of recently extinct animals. We missed this gargantuan and unique creature for just a few centuries.

Another incredible video showing a large male northern bottlenose whale feeding - on dead bycatch. Look at the heavy yellow diatomea staining and its enormous bulbous forehead.

We have fisher and observer reports, photos, and videos of this - including taking bycatch tossed to them (see video) - for decades off northern Labrador, Canada. They are often mix in with male sperm whales doing the same thing. Clever opportunists!

Today I saw a taxidermy specimen of a hooded seal in the Museum König in Bonn. The first time I have seen this awesome species. It looks really crazy, absolutely not like a real animal.

Watch this video, it's absolutely fascinating, a northern bottlenose whale feeding on halibuts on a longline. It could perhaps even the first time ever that a beaked whale was filmed feeding.

Some amazing footage of a Northern Bottlenose Whale off Greenland! I've never heard of this sort of opportunistic scavenging behaviour documented from any Beaked Whales before, and CERTAINLY never seen footage of it!

This was one of the most amazing freshwater fishes of our planet, and it has become extinct within our lifetime, just a few years ago. There is not even any footage of them in their natural habitat and we have to restore their life appearance as digital animation like dinosaurs.

Something you don't see very often, a porcupine (even one of the much lesser known Asian species) with its quills removed. You can still see some quills on the tip of the tail. The "scale" pattern on the quill bases is really fascinating.

This photograph of an unknown capybara-like animal was captured in 2010 in Laos. According to the story, it originally had hair but that was removed so they could cook it. Is there a large capybara species in Laos?

Exiting news from Australia: The newly described 47.000 yrs old Tiliqua frangens was a gigantic armoured skink which reached a length of about 60 cm und weighed more than 2 kg. In terms of weight it is the biggest skink on record. theconversation.com/meet-the-bigge…

Your reminder that Steller's seacow had a shell-like ribcage and extremely dense bones. Yet its overall density was so low that it floated on the surface. Just something to keep in mind regarding Perucetus' hypertrophied vertebra extensions.

This video has become quite popular. But the problem is, this is no #oarfish at all, it's a dealfish of the genus Trachipterus, which reaches about 3 m. And even real oarfish doesn't reach 11 m but only about 7-8 m.

The oarfish is a remarkably long open water lampriform fish that is seldom observed. They can reach an impressive lengths of 11 metres (36 feet). Here is one with some divers x.com/blabla112345/s…
