Exclusive: Within 13 months, four clients and one staff member fatally overdosed at facilities run by San Francisco's largest addiction treatment provider. Their deaths are among several signs that HealthRight’s programs are not working as designed.

Yesterday I watched San Francisco police officers detain Ramon Castillo, an unhoused man, for 20 minutes while Public Works employees discarded almost all of his belongings. Castillo was cited for illegal lodging and then released. He lost everything. (1/3)

San Francisco officials say citations and arrests of unhoused people are expected to increase in light of recent court rulings. They hope it’ll motivate people to move indoors, though there is not enough shelter beds for everyone living on the streets.

Another reporter and I were brought down by cops, told to put our faces to the ground and threatened with a baton — even after we told them we were with the media, which is allegedly exempt from San Jose’s curfew order @sliccardo @sjpdchief @SanJosePD @FreedomofPress @mercnews

While he was sitting in the back of a squad car, Public Works employees discarded all but his tarp, which would be “bagged and tagged” for possible retrieval later on. When he was released, Castillo stormed off with only the clothes on his back. (2/3)

Mark Schofield’s RV was impounded during an encampment sweep Friday morning. Schofield is from San Francisco but has been homeless for years after going in and out of prison. His vehicle registration was expired and officers said they’d given him multiple warnings.

Update: I just drove by the block where officials arrested Castillo and threw away his belongings. Just 24 hours later, three new tents have already appeared.

They broke through barricades, occupied the U.S. Capitol building and forced America's political leaders into hiding. Yet more people were arrested in a single night this summer in San Jose for staying out past curfew during protests over police brutality.
I’m thankful to be safe, but it’s actually unfathomable to me that Capitol Police were this unprepared. We knew there were going to be mass protests. We knew some people would try to storm the building. There have apparently only been 13 arrests. How did this happen?
