- Woodburning stoves have now been banned by the Scottish Government. A small thread: 1/7
- Replying to @MacmillanArcWhile the move towards zero direct emissions is to be welcomed, there has been little public consultation on this, and no loud announcement of a wood stove ban. It also feels very much like a central-belt based policy, with little regard paid to Scottish rural house dwellers. 7/7
- Replying to @theoldbuildingThe stair to first floor returns above that window, necessitating the lower window head. The door and window both open into the main entrance hallway.
- That is quite simply the best photograph. Of the best dogs.
- Replying to @MacmillanArcWhat was until last week a sustainable, renewable heat source, will be outlawed. As well as removing an essential backup source of heat for many, off-grid properties will no longer be able to use wood stoves. Woodland crofts will not be able to use their own timber. 5/7
- Replying to @MacmillanArc @aradastoves and 11 othersI would reiterate that this relates to the recently-adopted Building Standard, and will cover Building Warrants for new buildings submitted after 1 April 2024. This is not a retrospective ban on existing woodburning stoves.
- Replying to @MacmillanArcWe had previously sought clarification on 6.11 and had been advised that stoves would be permitted as a secondary heat source. Sensible, particularly in rural areas where power cuts are not uncommon. However there has now been a U-turn, and woodburning stoves are history. 4/7
- Replying to @MacmillanArcWhile there is a clause referring to Emergency Heating (6.11.2) which permits alternative heat sources as a backup, this will not extend to stoves. This is a seismic change, and one that has not been explicitly publicised. 3/7
- Replying to @MacmillanArc(I'd welcome the thoughts of fellow Scottish construction professionals. It's a rural issue for sure, but not an unimportant one.)
- Replying to @MacmillanArcFrom 1 April 2024 (last Monday), fossil and bio fuel heating systems will not be permitted in newbuild construction. As well as oil and gas heating, log boilers will be banned, as will solid fuel and woodburning stoves (Building Standard 6.11). 2/7
- Replying to @MacmillanArcThere will no longer be a requirement for chimneys or flues in Scotland – any you see will be dummies for aesthetic reasons. Stove suppliers and fitters will have to cut their business back to existing properties only – replacements and upgrades. 6/7
