I wrote about Jableh, a coastal Alawite city in Syria. There’s been a lot of misinformation about what happened there in March. But like all political and violent events, the story began long before the explosion. @LRB

The children seen in footage from recently liberated jails are believed to have been born to women raped by their captors. Imagine learning this and still insisting that Assad isn’t that bad.

Talking to friends and relatives in Syria, no one is sad that Assad fell. Then i come on Twitter, see the tankies freaking out, and wonder why we even bother engaging with people who can’t see Syria as anything but a piece in the regional politics puzzle

My sister was planning to come visit me in August. I have not seen her in four years. I can't leave to see her due to my expired Syrian passport and pending asylum case and now she can't come thanks to Trump. I wonder what keeps me in a country that treats us like criminals.

A repressive, authoritarian government, yet he tried every trick in the book to whitewash it. I'm glad he finally came clean after all these years and admitted he was cheering for a criminal.

a year ago I was crying at @AnandWrites office because I thought I wasn’t a good writer. He told me to believe in my voice, write, rewrite, and most importantly, to read. I am glad I listened to him, and happy to share I will be working on my first book with Penguin-Viking books
