A tradie, at my house for a repair, kept staring at me. I had all my wits about me in case he did anything untoward (unfortunately the way these days 😬). But after 45 mins of utter awkwardness he finally blurts out 'Um- I think you took out my appendix'. 🤣 #ILookLikeASurgeon šŸ”Ŗ

Still thinking about the recent meeting where a man gave me his coffee order, which I placed, before taking my place as meeting chair and watching his whole face change 🤣. Avoiding embarrassment is an excellent reason to examine #UnconsciousBias šŸ˜‰

For whoever needs it, this little gem from Miss 11- 'The teacher said I seemed quiet today... like I wasn't blooming. I said I'm fine Miss X. I'm just working on growing roots today instead of flowers'.ā¤ Hugs to everyone who is having a 'roots not flowers' day ā¤šŸŒ±.

It's that time every 4 years when Australians are again mystified why the so-called biggest democracy of the world still can't organise basic democratic processes. Voting in Australia is as simple as walk in, vote, walk out.
A friend of mine sent me these photos of the INSANE line to vote early in Omaha right now. Took them four hours to vote, which is wild. LFG! šŸ’™

My nose aches from masking and I'm on call until Monday morning, but in my office I can take my mask off briefly to wish you the happiest of New Years, in whatever form it takes. #Its2022 šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰

šŸ‘µšŸ» 'Nothing against you, you're a lovely doctor. But I want the *surgeon* to do my operation.' - I introduced myself as the surgeon - wear a nametag saying I'm a surgeon - completed the consent signing my name under 'Surgeon'. #GenderBias is remarkably stubborn. šŸ˜‘šŸ˜‘šŸ˜‘

I never thought it would be other doctors I'd have to protect my patients from. I make no apology for demanding masks in my theatre and around my immunocompromised patients. I don't care if you make fun of my mama bear ways. I prefer to avoid preventable morbidity and mortality.

Invited presenter at a small surgical meeting- 'The knitting lady isn't paying attention'. 1. I'm a surgeon 2. It's #crochet, not knitting 3. I haven't taken my eyes off you. Why don't you pick on the guy next to me playing on his phone? #ImplicitBias #ILookLikeASurgeon

Gave feedback to a junior doctor. The reply? 'In my culture, women do not speak to me like that'. 😮 Mate, #WelcomeToAustralia where I fear you will struggle in your medical career. #ILookLikeASurgeon #WomenInMedicine

Today a patient made jokes about not shaking my hand because of #coronavirus. In front of my team. I have not left Australia. This is not sensible public health precautions. This is #racism.
Today my son was cornered at school by kids who wanted to ā€œtestā€ him for #Coronavirus just because he is half-Chinese. They chased him. Scared him. And made him cry. I was the same age when I was bullied for being Pakistani. It’s 2020. I thought things had changed by now... šŸ’”

Just when I think the teenager couldn't get any more objectionable, I discover the reason he's been shouting unintelligibly in his room. He's made a list of elderly (and somewhat deaf) relatives and is ringing to check on them daily. Oh my heart. #TheKidsAreAlright #COVID19

Two trainee checkout operators at the supermarket today, due to other staff quarantining for the new local #COVID19 cases. The lady behind me snarled at them to hurry up. I spoke up in their defence and got 'well you're the reason COVID is IN this country'😳 #BeKind #NoToRacism

I'm a 4th gen doctor. This meant I went to good schools, socialised with other doctor's kids- many of whom also wanted to become doctors and shared tips and resources about medical school entry- and already knew many lecturers when I got in. It's *not* a level playing field. 1/2
You’re 24x more likely to become a doctor if your parents were doctors, compared to those whose parents did any other type of work. Similarly, you’re 17x more likely to become a lawyer if your parents are lawyers. Here’s how it varies among the elite professions.

Lisa is alive and safe. Thank you everyone for swift networking and support. For those criticising her using social media in this way- please consider why someone might not use local networks that clearly feel unsafe. Twitter community, you can be proud of yourselves. šŸ™ā¤ļø
