Gabon's Mayumba National Park is host to the world's largest population of nesting leather back turtles. This one showed up early in the season this afternoon in downtown Libreville! She laid 96 eggs in full view of the turtle friendly population before heading back to sea.

Our paper showing that giant pangolins and bats cohabit in underground burrows is somewhat over-shadowed by its implications for coronavirus transmission. What I find awazing is that the burrows go up to 25m underground! @StirUni @Parcs_Gabon

#Gabon is one of the most "HFLD" (high forest low deforestation) countries alongside #Guyana & #suriname. 88% covered in tropical rain forest. Each year we absorb over 100 million tons of CO2 net. Norway has made a first payment to Gabon for increasing net sequestration.

I shedded a tear for HRH Prince Philip - a true silverback of the Conservation world. As President of @WWF he came to Nigeria when I was working to create Cross River and Okomu NPs and to Gabon in 1999, 3 years before we created the network of 13 NPs. Thank you for your passion!

Two important papers published in Nature and Current Biology show that Bat and Pangolin Coronaviruses may be the source of SARS-CoV-2 which causes #COVID19. Gabon has signed a law to stop trade in bats and pangolins as a precaution. doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.… doi.org/10.1038/s41586…

President Emmanuel Macron walked in the Raponda Walker Arboretum - an “initiation” - before the Ine Forest Summit in Libreville #Gabon. I think it is safe to say he is now an ambassador for Africa’s equatorial rain forests alongside @PresidentABO

How to pay tribute to my big hearted friend of over 20 years, my “grand frère” Michael Moussa, who passed away today? He brought Gabon into the Commonwealth, fought for Nature &promoted Gabon in the four corners of the World. When the sadness has passed I will remember his smile!

Gabon is re-inventing itself right now - but the sunset in Lopé this evening shows that Gabon is the chosen land. The sun will keep rising on the “vert - jaune - bleu” and as a nation we will continue to be the “pays de dialogue” not war. The Last Eden.
