- “Empty-nest baby boomers own 28% of three-bedroom-plus U.S. homes, while millennials with kids own just 14%.“ My parents and my in-laws live in larger homes than I do (with my family incl. young kids). They also live in neighborhoods that will be challenging… 1/3Baby boomers are aging in place largely because they've paid off their homes or they don't want to trade in their lower mortgage rate. This trend is increasing homeowner tenure, exacerbating the shortage of homes for sale, and pushing up prices. #realestate
- Replying to @imtweetnMy concern is not inconvenience, it’s safety.
- PSA: Because this has become far too common, this (red arrow) is where cars are supposed to stop at intersections. The white blocked lines are a crosswalk. When that space is blocked by a car, it endangers pedestrians by forcing them to cross in less safe spots.
- I watched 15 drivers NOT yield to this kid before I walked into the school crosswalk to force drivers to stop. I recently learned that the state law forces this exact situation. Drivers don’t have to stop for pedestrians unless the ped is off the curb and IN the crosswalk. 1/2
00:00 - Replying to @chavablancoNope. If drivers are turning right on red, we are allowed to move into the intersection when it’s safe to complete the turn - but we have to check & yield to pedestrians. When waiting to go straight (as this driver was) we are required to stop before the crosswalk.
- I locked down replies on this post bc I don’t need any more of that, but my favorite part is how many people said “now show Minneapolis.” This ride (& basically every photo/video I share) is IN Minneapolis. I don’t live in the suburbs - I’m 3 miles from downtown. 1/2
- Yesterday I saw this crash happen. I called 911 while several people ran over to help get the driver out of the car. I noticed 2 things about everyone hands-on helping: 1) They were all pedestrians. No passing drivers stopped. 2) All were people of color. 1/9
- Replying to @GabinoStevoWhat? That’s what the traffic lights are for. I cross when I have a ped sign and wait when I don’t. I stay on the sidewalk while I wait.
- If it fits, I sits… illegally blocking the protected bike lane that was built to help folks to travel safely w/o having to mix with car traffic. Delivery drivers have very hard jobs &… (1/2)
- The average American uses crime stats as a measure of personal safety, while ignoring or accepting the risk of death/injury from a car crash as the cost of living in the US. 1/5
- When I taught kindergarten one of my students was accidentally run over and killed by his dad (in a large SUV w/ reduced sight lines) in their own driveway. Oversized vehicles are more deadly for those outside the car. When we had our third child I bought a Yukon. It’s very safe and built like a tank. We always had sedans and crossovers which have no chance against large trucks. The lives of my children are too important to risk to another driver.
- Replying to @LauraGMitchellfor aging in place bc a car is required to get anywhere due to sprawl, lack of walk/bike infrastructure and no transit. If/when they can no longer drive, they’ll be confined to their home or walking/biking in their highway-enclosed residential neighborhood. 2/3
- Replying to @LauraGMitchellThey’ll be forced to move or rely on delivery services/family to drive out and get them to the places they need to go. Everyone should live where they want. And I’m worried about all of the folks aging in place in car-centric neighborhoods. 3/3
