Sad to see my former student @Reginaip justifying the assault on HK freedom: “Critical thinking does not mean training people to criticize or attack.” Actually, critical thinking does mean training people to thoughtfully criticize. Democracy requires it.

This is not funny. Not excusable as "Trump being Trump." Not just embarrassing. This frantic politicization of our national security apparatus in the waning days of a defeated administration is endangering our democracy and the safety of all Americans.

This was the worst presidential debate in US history another indication that Trump respects no rules and has no civility or respect for democracy. It was repulsive to watch this bullying spectacle. An angry, authoritarian President who won’t commit to accept the election results.

As a democracy scholar, I never dreamed I’d say this, but the media and VP Biden should refuse to indulge this demagogue with another debate. There is no rule or standard of decency that Trump will respect. Don’t give him another platform to desecrate the process.

A highly credible, scientific Parallel Vote Tabulation shows a landslide opposition victory in Venezuela. Democracies must act to help the Venezuelan people defend this victory. #VenezuelaLibre

No president in American history has morally capitulated to an American adversary the way Trump did to Putin this week. But even to consider making former US Ambassador ⁦@McFaul⁩ available for Kremlin “questioning” is a sickening new low for Trump. thedailybeast.com/us-officials-a…

We now have the first instance of ranked choice voting producing a majority winner for a US congressional seat by counting second (and maybe third) preference votes. This is a historic step forward for American democracy.
Congratulations to Congressman-elect @golden4congress, the majority winner in Maine’s second district. Most important, congratulations and thank you to the courageous and persistent people of Maine for twice voting to help fix a broken political system. #MoreVoice #mepolitics

Congratulations to #HongKong democrats on the stunning success of their primary elections, in stunning defiance of the morally bankrupt Hong Kong administration and its communist masters in Beijing. #HongKongers: use all the space available to you continue your peaceful struggle.
Once again, #HongKongers have made their voice heard and their message clear. Now the world must act to ensure their will is respected and upheld. BBC News - Hong Kong: Opposition primaries draw thousands despite security law fears bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…

We need a bipartisan independent commission to investigate this colossal security failure: Some among America's military allies believe Trump deliberately attempted a coup and may have had help from federal law-enforcement officials businessinsider.com/trump-attempte… via @BusinessInsider

This swelling Republican coup attempt to steal the 2020 election is the most serious assault on American democracy since the Civil War. It should be denounced as such by anyone who cares about our constitutional democracy. #StopTheSteaI2021 via @NYTimesk

Completely without precedent in American history: 70 Republican former high-level national security officials denounce their party's incumbent President as corrupt, incompetent and a danger to our national security, and endorse his opponent. defendingdemocracytogether.org/national-secur…

An exceptionally important essay by the leader of Turkey's democratic opposition, now a political prisoner, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. We should loudly demand his release . Why Turkey’s democratic future matters for the world ft.com/content/4bf403… via @FT

"I happen to believe that the vote is precious. It’s almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent instrument or tool that we have in a democratic society." -- #JohnLewis. What a great American we have lost. Let's honor his memory by defending the right to vote.

My thanks and admiration go to ⁦@RepJayapal⁩ for courageously calling out India’s mounting violations of human rights. India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar refused to meet me. I won’t stop calling for human rights. - The Washington Post
