Have you ever thought about standing for your local council? Do you care about your community? Could you put your ideas into practice?
@serj4hasland says why she became a @UKLabour councillor. You could too. #Labourcllrs@LabourCllrs
Over 40 leaders from across the North have declared that they 'stand alongside' Greater Manchester leaders, and call on MPs to vote to ensure workers on the Job Retention Scheme receive 80% of income.
"We ask the Government to stand with us rather than seeking to divide us" 👇
At #PMQs@BorisJohnson got his council funding facts COMPLETELY WRONG, saying:
'in addition to the £3.2bn we've already put an extra £1.6bn to support councils' THIS IS NOT TRUE
'plus another £600m from my memory to go into social care' HIS MEMORY IS WRONG - ALSO NOT TRUE
‘You cut council budgets, and then campaign against council tax rises when councils have got no other choice but to do that’
Tory cuts to councils since 2010: £16bn
Tory increase in council tax since 2010: £10bn
@AndyBurnhamGM is not wrong, is he?
Council tax data for 2022/23 has been released today, showing that:
Average Conservative council tax bill: £1642 📈
Average Labour council tax bill: £1313🌹
Yes, Conservative council tax bills really are a whopping £329 higher than Labour councils this year!🤑
Contacts traced within 24 hours by:
Serco Test & Trace: 67%
Council teams: 97%
Hugely important debate today led by @RachelReevesMP and @SteveReedMP urging the government to let councils and local public health teams run contact tracing, as local gov demanded SIX MONTHS AGO.
NEW: Labour will use an opposition day debate today to urge the government to "ditch Serco and let councils and local public health teams run contact tracing": labourlist.org/2020/10/ditch-…
🌹🌹🌹ANNOUNCEMENT: 🌹🌹🌹
Congratulations to Cllr Nesil Caliskan @Nesil_Caliskan (Leader, Enfield) who has today been elected unopposed as the new leader of the @LGA_Labour group - our first ever female leader AND our first ever BME leader!
🤦♀️ Er, we’ve just double checked, and it turns out that the 7000+ Labour Councillors ARE in fact also Labour members.
I’m sure all other candidates for leader will be keen to talk to ‘THEM’ too, given their experience of delivering Labour values from power.
Apparently Starmer is already contacting Labour councillors, telling them that, as leader, he’d give THEM more say in how the party’s run.
Another way of saying, he’d take power away from members. And he’s offering this, effectively, as a carrot.
I’m not loving this direction.
⚠️ FACT CHECK ⚠️
Cuts to council funding since 2010: £16bn (yes, that’s SIXTEEN billion)
Covid19 costs for councils this year: £10.9bn
Gov funding for extra Covid costs: £4.9bn (so... £6bn LESS)
Watching @BBradley_Mans score an own goal against @MarcusRashford: PRICELESS
"We often hear that people don't trust politicians. I think the bigger problem is politicians don't trust the people. I do. We do. And when the people return Labour to power, Labour will return power to the people" 🔥 @Keir_Starmer#LabLocal21 👏
This is 100% right 👇
Councils spent billions fighting coronavirus because the government said they’d support them to do ‘whatever it takes’
They broke this promise - and instead of funding councils properly @RishiSunak is forcing council tax bills up by 5% instead.
Absurd.
We're facing the deepest recession in 300 years - millions of people are worried about the future of their jobs and how they will make ends meet.
It is absurd that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are forcing local governments to hike up council tax. telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/0…
