Absolutely thrilled to have this article by myself and @LouMycroft published @AJEnviroEd today:
[Birdsong]: Pedagogies of Attunement and Surrender with More-than-Human Teachers
Refusing to let teenage girls go to the toilet 'because they should have gone at break'? It's worth bearing in mind their period may not have started conveniently between 10.40 and 11am... and no they shouldn't have to say it...
Daughter’s received 7 written warnings at school this week.
It interests* me that not one of her misdemeanours (skirt length, forgetting a pen, standing up etc) would have been an issue if done by my (university) students. What does this tell us about how we view children?
*😬
Youngest daughter feels sad about her school report, so I’m going to write one :) ..about how her focus this term has been mainly on supporting her best friend through a significant bereavement. Showing empathy, learning about grief and love, and teaching me loads along the way❤️
All those people banging on about Tesco Clubcards are completely missing the point that you shouldn’t have to basically need to be a member of numerous supermarkets just to pay a decent price for food 🤷♀️🤦♀️
After being at her grandma’s funeral yesterday, my daughter got two written warnings at school today - one for not having a pencil and the other for having her coat on inside. Just sometimes…could we not? 😬
It needs saying (again) that very often the best students I teach (who go on to get Firsts) didn’t get good (or sometimes any) GCSEs. Particularly true for mature students who were disenfranchised from schooling for a range of reasons.
Spoiler: university isn’t school
My friend’s daughter was rejected by Leeds Uni on the algorithm. Took her second choice instead, and despite the u-turn is sticking with that. Says they missed their chance ;)
Then show them the sanitary towels. Not even joking.
When menstruation begins it’s unpredictable, often exceptionally painful + strict toilet access policies contribute to the reason girls want to stay home. Serious education required here (or ‘powerful knowledge’ 🙄)
🤦♀️🤦♀️🙄
