This is really lovely - I am Agent of the Year - thank you!
Well done to @CBGBooks' @KarolinaSutton, who has been named this year's Literary Agent of the Year, after representing TWO @TheBookerPrizes winners in once year, she now has her own trophy! #Nibbies @AmazonPub @MrsAmandaProwse

Is this true that in deciding exam results an algorithm took into account past results from the same school? If so then stifling social mobility is its aim and it feels criminal. It goes against everything that we are made to believe about education.

Does everyone agree that video conferencing can only be a short-term replacement? After three in a row you feel mentally and physically shattered. A flat and sad approximation of human contact.

My 18-month goddaughter pops into the office and her first full word to me is ‘book!’ as she points at the bookshelves in delight. Phew. That’s her life skills taken care of.

Happy 80th birthday, ⁦⁦Margaret Atwood! #Atwood80 - we are celebrating 8 decades of Margaret’s brilliant writing (she wrote her first book Annie the Ant at 7), dry wit, sharp intellect, love and understanding of nature, and more! ⁦@MargaretAtwood⁩ 🐜

Been shopping. Booksellers are amazingly well prepared, both my local indie and ⁦@Waterstones⁩ - hand sanitisers, quarantine trolleys, contactless payments, visors. Let’s support them.

Margaret Atwood on writing books that go nowhere and end up in a drawer: ‘You can’t explain why they are not working. They are just not working’. This is from a writer with over 50 published books to her name. She has unpublished work in her drawer too.

From the coalface of publishing: all editors are saying no more witches please or retellings of myths.

I have no idea why agents or editors say this. In fiction there is no discernible correlation between social media presence and book sales. In non-fiction you can build a large audience online, but you’ll only see correlation if your book and your tweets are on the same subject.
Someone told me that they were at a literary conference a few months ago and all the editors and agents were saying that new writers absolutely must engage with social media. This is awful advice. Nobody has to be here. This place is a cesspit. Don’t do it if you hate it!

Publishers & agents get to ask themselves daily where they would draw the line, what books they wouldn't take on. The answer defines us.

The expectation to smile if you are a woman, particularly if you are a young woman, is a real patriarchal bore. It’s not just something you are expected to do. It’s something men will actually tell you to do without thinking twice and no matter what context. The entitlement.
