In 2017, @drewhinshaw & I entered a Nigerian cabinet minister’s office to ask why Boko Haram was ascendent. “Because we gave them millions of euros for the Chibok girls!” he said with a nervous chuckle It was a slip of a tongue that set us on a journey amazon.co.uk/Bring-Back-Our…

I was last at Lekki toll gate on Monday night - this was the scene.

12 hours since security forces fired live rounds at #endSARS protesters at Lekki toll gate and no word from Nigeria’s government.

Nigeria’s president was one of the first African leaders to congratulate Biden but privately, some of his key advisors were hoping for a Trump victory and are worried. The reasons are quite simple and are linked — human rights, the #EndSARS protests, and weapon sales. THREAD
Congratulations to US President-Elect Joe Biden on his election at a time of uncertainty and fear in world affairs. His election is a reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means.

Tonight Nigerian security forces stormed the most prominent site of the #EndSARS protests in Lagos, firing live rounds & killing several people as the government sought to end two weeks of marches against police brutality. Here's our report - and a thread:

President Buhari addresses the nation, but says nothing about the shooting of protesters at Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday.
Fellow Nigerians, It has become necessary for me to address you having heard from many concerned Nigerians and having concluded a meeting with all the Security Chiefs.

Nigeria’s legal system, which is yet to convict a single suspect for the kidnapping of almost 1000 schoolchildren since December, has a new priority… People on Twitter.
A spokesman to Nigeria’s Attorney General told CNN that anyone still tweeting will be brought before the law. cnn.com/2021/06/05/afr…

The youth-led protests in Nigeria are still growing - and today the #EndSARS demonstrators managed to essentially shut down Africa's largest city. I'm in Lagos -- here's a link to our latest story and a short thread on why you need to pay attention.

Trying to understand how two weeks of #EndSARS protests over police brutality in Nigeria have escalated, with security forces firing live rounds?.... Here’s what you need to know.

In 1983, Chinua Achebe accused Nigeria's leader, General Buhari, of "a failure of leadership." In 2020, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche lays the same charge at President Buhari's door. #EndSARS

Lots to unpack in a single tweet. 1) President admits money and vehicles being paid to kidnappers. 2) Says federal government had nothing to do with it (although knew it was happening) 3) Blames state governments for not doing enough to protect school security. “Don’t blame me”
State Governments must review their policy of rewarding bandits with money and vehicles. Such a policy has the potential to backfire with disastrous consequences. States and Local Governments must also play their part by being proactive in improving security in & around schools.

    Replying to @JoeWSJ
So... President Biden may be much less welcoming to Buhari; much more skeptical about selling weapons to Nigeria’s military and much more forthright in criticising any crackdown on protests. That’s why, despite the tweets, some at the top of the Buhari administration are nervous.

As Nigeria commiserates the 10 year anniversary since the eruption of the Boko Haram insurgency, the Presidency & Military are still repeating the line that the militants have been "technically defeated." Here is a story that shows the reality behind those soundbites. (THREAD)

Inside Chernobyl, 200 staff are now hostages: toiling round the clock at gunpoint on the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. They are exhausted, hungry and want to go home. And they are starting to defy their Russian captors. This is their story wsj.com/articles/insid…
