Hey TO friends: Want to help COVID-19 research? We're recruiting folks who have had an A/Z shot followed by a Pfizer or Moderna boost less than 3 weeks ago. For your saliva and a small amt of blood we provide compensation + your test result. DM me or @SalmaSheikhM_ tout suite!

Professor and Chair, Dept of Immunology, UofToronto. I study immune responses in the brain and the mucosae. Opinions are my own.
- 10 y.o.: Dad why does mom play ABBA and drink wine? Dad: she sends papers to big journals and they find her work "interesting" but reject
- 1/ Hi twitter academia. This is a 🧵on an experience I had at a conference recently. After my oral presentation, I was TOLD that it was not reasonable to pose and test a hypothesis in mice based on observations made in the clinic. I was TOLD this was the WRONG way to do it.
- 1/ I’m super excited to post our recent findings on the mucosal immune response to COVID-19 vaccines.
- A big moment for me: I started as an u/g then grad student in Immunology @UofT. After 20 years of running my lab @uoftmedicine, alongside my friends and colleagues I am now excited to lead the Dept as Chair. Thank you all my mentors, family and friends for support along the way.
- 1/ Congratulations to an amazing team of scientists on our recent publication entitled “Systemic and mucosal IgA responses are variably induced in response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination and are associated with protection against subsequent infection”
- Today is Day 1 serving as the first ever female Dept of Immunology Chair @uoftmedicine, @UofT. Am I nervous - yes! Am I scared? No - I have great colleagues who will support me and…it’s going to be fun!
- Super pleased that I can now announce that I have been awarded a Canada Research Chair in Tissue Specific Immunity. Thank you for your support @CRC_CRC, @CDNScience, @uoftmedicine and @researchuoft.
- Nice paper: nature.com/articles/s4146…. As we reconfigure vaccines against new variants, why not do a twofer by adding an intranasal boost following systemic administration. This can help block transmission and potentially provide breadth of response against VOC. NOW IS THE TIME!
- 1/ Big weekend for those of us thinking about eliciting mucosal immunity for protection against SARS-CoV-2. New studies by @florian_krammer, @VirusesImmunity and @McMasterU herein as well as an update on our own work.
- 1/Wow - I had no idea this was coming. I’m so humbled. And I recognize that there are so many other women who I admire who are also making history now. Starting with the women in our lab, both present and alumni.Today, for #WomensHistoryMonth we would like to highlight @JenGommerman, a professor in the Dept. of #Immunology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Gommerman has made significant contributions to our understanding of B cells and key members of the TNF superfamily.
- 1/“There is nothing “unnatural” about vaccine-acquired immunity and there’s nothing “natural” about promoting disease and potential long-term disability through infection”. Great to be a part of this rebuttal to the misguided G&M piece over the weekend.
- Replying to @JenGommerman8/ So before you pounce, ask yourself how you can pose a question that will broaden the scientific discussion. Not stifle it. And if you are the type of person to go down the rabbit hole, remember you are not alone. It happens to the best of us. #impostersyndrome. /fin.
- Today I turn 50. I am grateful to be healthy in mind, body and spirit (that’s me portaging a canoe and pack yesterday!). I wish all of you the same good fortune.
