I really dislike this argument. If the word "colonialism" is going to do any analytic work (and it should), we need to distinguish it from conquest and social assimilation. When we use the word, we mean something very modern (c. 1500) and politically specific.
The impact of Arab colonialism should be recognised in the same way and using the same tools as the impact of Roman colonialism, the impact of British colonialism, and the impact of Mongol colonialism, etc.
