Was surprised to see the name of Lillys new experimental Alzheimer’s antibody — remternetug — didn’t end in “mab,” as all antibody drugs do
Learned that, apparently, the 3-decade era of “mab” ended last year, as scientists just ran out of new names(???)

- Coolest story I’ve written in a while. We can now say some of the first CAR-T patients were cured. And 10 years later, their modified cells are still working, still hunting for any cancer that might pop up
- mRNA vaccines were meant to be designed on a dime — plug and play, programmable, all that. The fact that Pfizer started designing a small molecule in March 2020 and now (appears to) have an incredibly effective drug feels like as great, if not greater, technical achievement
- 3 yrs ago, the Biden Administration announced a $3.2B plan to build antivirals for Covid and whatever pandemic nature might throw at us next Most of the plan, I learned, was never enacted. And what was built — 9 antiviral centers — may soon be dismantled
- Very humbled by this award, which has gone to some of my favorite science writers over the years. And thankful to all the sources — parents, advocates, scientists — who gave parts of their very scarce time for these piecesCongratulations to @Jasonmmast of @statnews for winning the 2024 Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award! The judges called his work on the genetics of disease moving, thought-provoking, and creative. Jason will be honored at #SciWri24 in November. More: casw.org/news/jason-mas…
- Hard to emphasize this enough: If you start a company that promises to use AI to make drugs “on demand” without preclinical (lab/animal) studies and with “no risk”, we will note the potential but also write *very* skeptically about it Yes, this is a subtweet of my inbox
- So it happened. After over a decade of data and discussions, a company has filed for approval for a gene therapy for sickle cell
- So, slight addendum to the news Eli Lilly is cutting the cost of insulin, which it cast as an act of corporate altruism In doing so, Lilly also avoided massive fees from medicaid under a 2021 law. Great reporting from @john_wilkerson
- Vir Biotechnology announced today it's all but abandoning infectious disease research and pivoting to cancer. My story from May on how a grand, billion-dollar plan to build a company to create "a world without infectious disease" fell apart:
- One of my last stories for Endpoints. I got to visit the Baker lab, a bustling 100-person hub where researchers are closing in a longtime holy grail: Designing proteins from scratch. Drug development — and a whole lot else — may never be the same
- RFK warned followers about about dangers of CRISPR gene editing, while investing in CRISPR Therapeutics via @rachelcohrs @owermohle + @isabellacueto
- Legend and J&Js BCMA CAR-T approved 95% response rate, 87% complete response. Big day for field, and multiple myeloma patients (not so great day for $BMS) From @Nicole_DeFeudis
