I had an absolute blast chatting with @juanbenet about the future of neurotech. For neurotech to reach everyone who needs it, we need treatments that are both more effective and dramatically easier to deliver. That’s the ambition behind the programmes I’m leading at
Episode 3 of my new podcast features Dr. Jacques Carolan (@JacquesCarolan), a founding Program Director at ARIA (@ARIA_research), the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency. He directs two neurotech programs aimed at one of the most important opportunity spaces: developing

🚨I am *super* excited to announce that I will be joining @ARIA_research as a Programme Director!!🚨 I will be exploring how we can leverage principles from physics⚛️, engineering🤖 and biology🧬to develop next-gen neurotechnologies🧠 Here are some questions I’m excited about...
Here we go 💥 We’re so excited to introduce ARIA’s first cohort of Programme Directors.

This is WILD: High-density GHz-speed spatial light modulation enabled by CMOS-scale photonic crystal cavities 😱😱😱 From neuroscience to quantum computing to classical comms, this work will be a game changer for many fields!
Finally! arxiv.org/abs/2204.10302 Backstory: A mm^2 -ish aperture of glass could easily carry all the world's data traffic passing through undersea fiber-optic cables (>10^15 bits/s). That huge bandwidth explains in part why it’s so difficult to completely control multimode light

💥Something very cool just arrived in the post💥 The PRINT version of our philosophy book 'Analogue Quantum Simulation', written w/ the wonderful Dominik Hangleiter @JointQuICS and Karim Thébault @BristolUni, and published by @SpringerNature!! 🥳🥳🥳

🚨Excited to share that our programme thesis is live!🚨 We lay out a vision for ***precision neurotech*** capable of tackling some of the most complex brain disorders at the circuit level. We believe this is possible by leveraging advances in bio- & hardware-engineering🧠🧬💻
Can we unite the frontiers of engineered biology and hardware to detect + treat brain disorders? 🧠 In our latest programme thesis, @JacquesCarolan sets out a vision for next-gen tech to interface with the brain at the circuit level👇1/2

🚨Very excited to share my ARIA opportunity space!🚨 Brain disorders are a huge challenge to society and we need a new suite of tools to precisely interface with the human brain at scale. 🧠I'd love to hear from neuroscientists, engineers, clinicians etc working in this space!🧠
🧠ARIA PD @JacquesCarolan has released his opportunity space “Precisely interfacing with the human brain at scale”. He’s exploring how to build targeted, minimally invasive tools to better understand and treat disorders of the brain and looking for feedback.

Our @ARIA_research Precision Neurotech programme will launch in *early July*, which will develop new tools to tackle the most complex brain disorders at the circuit level. It's a big goal + to get there, we need multi-disciplinary teams. Find out how to get involved 👇

What a remarkable result! Electric fish directly use signals from others to 'collectively sense' their environment. Note, this is different from flocking etc., which is based on behavioural responses... wild (and reminds me of multi-sensor networks) nature.com/articles/s4158…

We did it!!! 🚴‍♂️💨We cycled Lands End to John o’Groats (most southern to northern pts of UK): 1100 miles (1770 km). 12 days. 14000 m of ascent (and descent). 2 broken spokes. 5 punctures (all in a single day). 1 new wheel. -1 pair of Crocs. Countless muesli bars.

It’s such an honour to be a founding PD at @ARIA_research. The talent, energy and focus across the entire agency is incredible. If anyone wants to chat next-generation neurotechnology, my DMs are open 🧠🔬⚡️
Excited @JacquesCarolan is part of our first cohort of Programme Directors to imagine new ways to interface with the human nervous system to non-invasively provide neuropsychiatric treatment. Find out more here: aria.org.uk/what-were-work…
