Are we headed toward a technology revolution in therapeutic BCI? I just wrote this piece about why I believe neurotech will become an indispensable tool for addressing the growing mental health crisis and become as common as personal computing. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/brainjacob… #BCI

Half of the STEM faculty positions I interviewed for were ultimately filled by female candidates because they were actually more qualified than me.

Before we all start dissecting the neuralink show and tell tomorrow I wanted to share some of the other neurotech startups that I think are doing cool stuff (besides us at @motifneuro of course!) It’s a great #neurotechrevolution community!! 🧵

So this is happening! I’m taking a sabbatical to start a minimally invasive bioelectronics company: @motifneuro We plan to demonstrate the smallest, least invasive neural interface in humans by the end of 2024. Wish us luck! 🤞 🧠

I’m so thankful for the many fantastic students I’ve had the privilege of working with over the last 10 yrs. Promotion is a credit to them and I’m glad that I can now write letters for them as a full prof. Following their careers is going to be a lot of fun!

I really love this story because we solved a problem by making a new class of magnetic materials. Let me tell you why we couldn't rely on naturally occurring magnetic materials for neuromodulation + why temporal interference for neuromodulatoin is suspect 🌶️ 🧵

Thrilled to share our latest pre-print: Stimulating peripheral nerves from within blood vessels with a millimeter-sized battery-free implant. Buckle up, it's #bioelectronics #tweeprint time! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Lot of reviewer 2’s saying nothing new in the #Neuralink demo yesterday. Who are all these people wirelessly streaming spikes from 1024 channel flex electrodes with a fully subcutaneous device for 2 mo!? I want to read those papers.

The preprint is live! Pea-sized brain stimulator demonstrated in humans. Stimulating Motor cortex drives hand movement like TMS. With devices like this @motifneuro is working to make neuromodulation for mental health more effective and accessible. 🧵

Can’t wait to take the next step with @motifneuro! This funding will allow us to launch the first clinical trial with magnetoelectric-powered implants - a new architecture for neuromodulation. Credit to team at Motif and the supportive environment at Rice and the Launchpad!
Rice Biotech Launch Pad startup Motif Neurotech closes Series A financing of $18.75 million! Congratulations ⁦@JTRobinsonLab⁩ and ⁦@motifneuro⁩ team! prnewswire.com/news-releases/…

Excited to take the lid off our first-in-human study with the Motif Neurotech microstimulator. A decade of work to go from concept to human studies. Thanks to team: @motifneuro, @RiceUniversity, Baylor College of Medicine, and UTHSC. Pre-print for my fellow nerds coming soon! 🧠
Another brain chip company, @motifneuro, gets chips in two human skulls for depression. My exclusive bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Controlling flies with magnets is the kind science I never knew I needed to do. Congrats to Charles Sebesta and colleagues! Their paper on fast mutichannel magnetogenetics in fruit flies is out now in @NatureMaterials! rdcu.be/cQutZ
