It's shocking how little attention the total collapse in Covid-19 deaths in Japan is getting. There was 1 official coronavirus death in Japan yesterday. Canada: 23 deaths France: 103 deaths Germany: 390 deaths Italy: 72 deaths UK: 142 deaths U.S.: 3,798

A lot of the world has stopped talking about Covid, so you might have missed this amazing fact: Japan now has the lowest Covid-19 death rate amongst developed nations. If the US had Japan’s death rate, only 82,000 people would have died. Not 1 million+. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

There’s a lot that seems to be going wrong in the world right now, but an amazing story not getting enough attention is the collapse in Covid-19 deaths and infections in Japan. The country is averaging less than one death a day right now. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Beijing can be a tough place to live sometimes. But today, my wallet fell from my pocket while I was cycling. A delivery guy saw it drop and then chased me down on his bike to return it. Such a nice thing to do.

I would imagine China would have some ripe words about violations of the “international principle of non-interference” if Japan tried to tell President Xi where he could or couldn’t go.

It’s really quite amazing to watch the whole government and state-media do a handbrake turn and head off in the other direction on Covid.
COVID is not something to fear. Even if you are infected you can boost your immune system to mitigate the effects. Li says. "The severe type of COVID is not caused by COVID itself. The virus storms the immune system. Chinese medicine can stop symptoms from becoming too severe."

One of the most inexplicable things about China's Covid Zero policy is why the government didn't push elderly vaccinations more. The fact that they didn't is one reason that they can't change course now. But I've not seen a good explanation as to why not that's the case.

Xi today called for policies to address the collapse in births. The Communist Party may control many aspects of domestic life, but getting people to have more babies is one area it has failed.

China in people's minds: a high-tech surveillance state. China reality: I need 4 different Wechat mini-programs to travel between provinces. They all require the same information and don't talk to each other. 1 of them can't deal with non-Chinese names or foreign passports.

If you're wondering why China just doesn't open up from Covid Zero, here is at least part of the answer: the mainland has failed to get the most vulnerable people fully vaccinated. Only 40% people 80 years or older have had a booster (which likely means a third shot).
