The raising of nuclear alert levels by the Russian Federation only increases the risk of catastrophic miscalculation. There are no victors with nuclear weapons. Only victims. Restraint, de-escalation and risk reduction are urgently required for the sake of all our security.

This morning, I was again at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony to remember and honor victims & brave Hibakusha, and to reconfirm UN’s commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons. @UN will not rest until the nuclear shadow has been lifted once and for all. #CranesForOurFuture

Ukraine made the right decision in 1994 to completely denuclearize for its own & our collective security. Arguments that a nuclear Ukraine would be safer today are fallacies. Nuclear weapons do not make anyone safer. In fact, nuclear weapons pose an existential threat to all.

There is a “once in a lifetime moment” - I had such a moment today. Private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis @Pontifex gave me strength, inspiration & courage for our work for peace through disarmament efforts. His warmth, humility & love for people touched me deeply.

76 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, I reflect on the powerful meaning of this origami crane as a global symbol of peace. It reminds us that together, we must craft a brighter future, one that is free from the threat of #nuclearweapons. #CranesForOurFuture

My warmest congratulations to Nihon Hidankyo and all brave Hibakusha! This is an important recognition of their tireless work, but also a powerful message to world leaders - to listen to Hibakusha’s voices and urgently advance nuclear disarmament. For security of humankind.
One day, the atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be among us as witnesses to history. But with a strong culture of remembrance and continued commitment, new generations in Japan are carrying forward the experience and the message of the witnesses.
Photo of a origami crane. Origami cranes have become a powerful symbol of a world without nuclear weapons after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
