To be clear, our request to access the POWs from Olenivka penal facility yesterday has not been granted.
Granting ICRC access to POWs is an obligation of parties to conflict under the Geneva Conventions.
Today, our team tried to facilitate a safe passage out of #Mariupol.
But had to return to Zaporizhzhia after conditions made it impossible to proceed.
We will try again tomorrow.
It’s critical the parties respect agreements and provide the necessary security guarantees.
UPDATE: Our team led a convoy of buses and private cars with over 500 people to Zaporizhzhia.
Those who were part of the convoy had managed to flee #Mariupol.
We hope this helps people find the safe haven they so desperately need right now.
Just in: Medical supplies and 2.5 tons of insulin has safely arrived in Odessa, #Ukraine.
This will go a small way towards ensuring those in urgent need have access to medical care.
We strongly condemn the recent attack on a penal facility holding prisoners of war (POWs) in Olenivka.
Too many lives have been lost and families torn apart in the armed conflict in #Ukraine.
We immediately requested access to Olenivka and POWs, offering our assistance. ⬇️
Civilians being killed is unacceptable.
Civilians are not legitimate targets of attack.
They must be protected at all times, as stated by international humanitarian law⚖️
Water supply has been resumed for #Irpin and other cities in the Kyiv suburb.
In just 18 days, 7km of pipes to connect Kyiv and Irpin water canals were built, reaching 200,000 people.
We supported the works financially and were on the ground providing the necessary equipment.
We are shocked and saddened by the loss of a @RedCrossUkraine volunteer due to the recent shelling in the Kherson region.
Our thoughts are with their staff, volunteers and family at this devastating time.
🔴Humanitarian aid workers and volunteers are #NotATarget. EVER.
UPDATE: Over 500 tons of medical supplies, food and essential aid have arrived in Ukraine since the escalation of the conflict.
This aid is currently being distributed across the country in response to the growing humanitarian needs.
Here are some examples 👇
