My 4-part series on Inflation and the Economy. Explores all the positive and negative indicators, media bias, and partisanship. - Part 1: x.com/Historian_Stev… - Part 2: x.com/Historian_Stev… - Part 3: x.com/Historian_Stev… - Part 4:
    1. The last in my series of THREADS on Inflation and the Economy (Part 4 of 4) poses a media-centered explanation for Americans’ negative impressions of the economy and concludes with an exposition of key concepts intended to help us understand the complexities of our economy.

Your periodic reminder that less ice at the Arctic is consistent with a weaker jet stream that allows cold air to drift down into the Great Plains. The frigid temps you're experiencing happen BECAUSE of a warming planet, not in spite of it.

It depresses me deeply that for the third presidential election in a row there will be a disproportionate media focus on Trump, Trump voters, and his rallies. These. voters. never. spoke. for. a. majority. of. Americans. Not once. And we're sick of hearing about them.

Don't let anyone claim that it's "elite" or condescending toward "real" Americans to know this. Those are bullshit arguments designed to preserve fossil fuel profits. Rather, it's liberating to actually take an interest in knowing how things work.

oh FFS I am NOT transcribing this. I HATE coming across this crap in collections. The things people would do to save a few pennies. If I was the recipient of this letter I'd be pissed.

1/ THREAD. How do we know the #CivilWar was caused by #slavery? Academic historians will know this but this is intended for others. It's not enough just to say it. Let's get the evidence out there.

There's a lot of politics. Fellow academics are not as open minded or willing to consider evidence as you might expect if it challenges their preconceived worldviews. There's conformity. It's a business where students are customers. Success does not reflect talent or hard work.

    1. Historian here. Manifest Destiny was a justification for imperialism and white supremacy. It had significant northern support but was largely about the westward expansion of southern slaveholders, with tragic consequences for Native Americans and African Americans.

When conservatives complain about "woke" academia, they're usually referring to the humanities. Yet engineering departments tied financially to defense contractors and fossil fuel giants are just as much a part of academia as the humanities. Who has more power & influence?

For most periods in U.S. history we've had two political parties offering contrasting ideological programs within the confines of a democratic republic. Today we have one political party that accepts democratic norms while the other is a de facto authoritarian party.

There isn't a day that goes by that I wonder to myself, where did we go wrong? There are lots of valid responses. The 1980 election is one because we're still suffering the consequences. But I can't shake the feeling that Bush v. Gore was where it all went wrong.

One of those things that seems too "partisan" to be true, but is, in fact, true. Just like what I've included here from the NYT Feb 2021

Here's a very good example of why historians should keep up on the news and encourage their students to do so, too. If you teach the early U.S. history survey like I do, this would be good to include. #NativeAmericans @twitterstorians #Archaeology
