I GOT A JOB OFFER!!!! 🚨 I’m going to be a whole Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at 26 😭😭 only in my wildest dreams did I ever dare to hope for this I am absolutely stunned and so grateful ❀️

I was disrespected by another professor today. It’s taking time to process exactly why I felt so upset. (And if you’re wondering, yes he was) Perhaps it was the attitude he caught when I told him that we had the room booked, while my students were actively meeting in said room

A thread for PIs on supporting Black students: I cried to my PI yesterday. I was explaining that I’m trying my best. Even in the midst of all this, I am TRYING to be a good grad student. I was trying to force myself to write my advancement document all last week. I couldn’t.

I am so pissed that I’m shaking. It’s around 5pm, broad daylight. I had to go to lab briefly so my husband drove me. We pull up, there’s a white man sitting in his car across from us (important for later). I go in, do what I need to, and am out less than 10 mins later.

The audacity of this man. The frustration I felt in knowing that I couldn’t say what I really wanted to. And the questioning about if my other white male co-director was present, if the response would’ve been the same.

Yet really, I think it was when one of my students said β€œI’m sorry you had to go through that” as I came back in the room. Then I had to proceed with our meeting like everything was ok.

I’ve officially been a neuroscience professor for a full year! ✨ Moving across the country & figuring out my unique role has been challenging, but very enjoyable ❀️ For new faculty (or really any job), there are 3 things I HIGHLY recommend you do your first year:

Maybe it was his insistence that the room was his, even though it clearly stated on the schedule taped to the door that my group had it booked (for the same time/day all semester) And his refusal to acknowledge that he indeed had booked it.. for two hours earlier πŸ™ƒ
