Joe Root exemplary as ever on and off the pitch in Taunton the last 4 days.
I asked him for his impressions of @SomersetCCC talented youngsters, particularly the 2 Rews, Thomas & Ogborne:
I know I mentioned it on comms earlier, but I really don’t like what Quinton De Kock did to Fakhar Zaman earlier, shouting & gesturing pretending it was going to the bowler’s, non-striker’s end. Desperately poor & absolutely no need for it, very much against the spirit of cricket
Gregory having been seconds from shaking hands on a draw, then 1 of the best wins:
“4 day cricket & 4 day wins are the most enjoyable you get as a cricketer
It’s a format that everyone up there loves playing
The championship is something we are desperate to win.”
& on Banton:
The best attended four quarter-finals in 11 years, & in a week with a test match & Australia playing 2 T20s in Edinburgh involving could’ve been county players too.
Serious love for county cricket in this country even when farmed to cold September nights with a flooded south!👊🏻
England again looking like a team that have neglected 50 over🏏since winning the World Cup in this format in 2019.
No building of innings.
Would be fascinating to have seen how the best XI of the @onedaycup fared, say:
Lyth
Gubbins
Lammonby
Rew
Barnard
Brookes
Milnes
etc?!
Tom Banton has batted all day for Somerset’s highest ever first-class score!
Past Viv Richards et al & then the former top man, Justin Langer (342 at Guildford)
Now with 344* at close of play having batted all day!
637-6!

Just had a very special @SomersetCCC moment with Somerset’s legendary fan Tractor Driver, just looking out at the ground, over the scoreboard & reminiscing on the 4 days, then joined by 1 of the heroes Archie Vaughan- beaming like a Cheshire Cat still too 😀

Not all heroes wear capes!!🦸
Tom Banton, like James Hildreth against Notts after that Jake Ball yorker hit his ankle those years ago, is hobbling out to bat in Somerset’s biggest Championship game of the season.
Tom Lammonby is his runner.
153-9

Emotional🏏today:
My only remaining grandparent, 93 y-old Gran zimmer-framed 100m to watch me, my 1st captaining in Devon league. Won toss on a green 1-bowled,they got 366!
Somehow managed 121* (my 1st Dev league ton) but 273-4 (our highest all season) was still a losing score!
TOM BANTON-NEW HOLDER OF SOMERSET’S HIGHEST EVER FC SCORE!
“It’s weird I was feeling quite emotional back in the changing rooms.
It’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had in cricket, it’s probably never gonna happen ever again.”
