Teaching an athlete how to rotate properly to transfer energy efficiently requires a fundamental understanding of how to work through the middle of your body.

Organizing pitching drills into categories allows us to understand the objective and amplify the feelings we’re attempting to repeat.
Pole loaded step backs are a great pseudo category between “deficit” and “disassociation” drills.

Better understanding of “disassociation”: how can we find ways to achieve the feeling? 🤔
In simplest terms, disassociation allows players to understand the brief window of firing the back hip against the front side while maintaining internal rotation.

Rotational efficiency and separation comes from the athlete’s ability to create parallel planes of rotation via the trunk and torso relationship.
If you feel yourself struggling with this, try adding this 3-part series into your warmup routine.

Back knee banded ER Drill is a great way to “feed the mistake” and teach the body to drive the back knee and heel down and backwards towards second base in order to propel forward momentum without losing ground connection.
The band stays outside the knee and is being pulled
2lb medball downhill variations are an effective drill that provide a few benefits:
✔️ performing reps with high intent while creating minimal valgus stress
✔️ learning to create proper disassociation/leverage movements
✔️ easier to focus on lower half mechanics

A common phrase used in the pitching community is “vertical shin angle”. It paints a picture of understanding where the knee and foot relationship need to be in the back leg in order to create back hip external rotation.
The disconnect we tend to see in players is that this is
🚨 UNDERSTANDING TORQUE AND DISASSOCIATION🚨
Torque refers to rotational force in the pitching motion where tension is created into foot strike.
In the simplest terms, “disassociation” means…

Pitching drills can be categorized into different groups based off their objectives.
QB Stepbacks are categorized under a group called “deficit” drills due to the trade off of negative net force in an attempt to recreate the following:

Finding an athlete’s ideal depth in their hinge can be difficult due to the fact that the amount of hinge necessary differs from case to case.

When throwing a changeup, the intent will always outweigh the grip.
Grips can help with manipulation of the movement, but selling it through arm speed outweighs the deceptive value of movement on the pitch.
Preset the grip and throw it with intent.
@FlatgroundApp
Retraining your body to allow the hips to become the primary driver in your delivery can be a little tricky. Whenever we ramp up intent on our high velocity days, many of us have a tendency to try and “speed up our arm”.

Creating pelvic rotation while keeping the torso stacked over hips/trunk can be a tricky sensation to replicate.
If you struggle with chasing the lead leg post-foot strike, use a stability ball to maintain a quiet upper half while focusing on pelvic rotation.

Most pitchers spend the vast majority of their time either in the weight room, training room, or the mound.
No matter how strong you are, how healthy you are, or how well you understand pitching mechanics, one thing is for certain:
