Most non-religious people wouldn’t have a problem with religion if it was something benign & privately practiced, instead of something weaponized to oppress people, justify harmful beliefs & rituals, proselytize & convert, and infiltrate government.

If you live outside the USA, does our gun violence epidemic make you less likely to want to vacation here?

My atheist husband had a coworker approach him at a new job to tell him how great he’s doing & then she went on about how she can tell he’s “blessed with The Spirit” & “God shines through” him in a way she doesn’t “see in other Christians” b/c he’s so jovial and kind.

I had a brain tumor when I was a 17 year old high school senior. People who spent their lives to discover what the real problems are & what the real solutions are via science gave me my life back. Religion would’ve killed me.

Yes, he learned that his coworker falsely assumes being a caring, happy person requires being in her religious cult. I wouldn’t say that was life-changing though. It’s a pretty common arrogance & pride that cult members wear.

“Atheism is a religion” Oh? Who’s our leader & what kind of funny hat do they wear, what is our “holy” book that inspires us to fight over interpretations & splinter into sects, what are the rules about food, clothes, & sex, what are our holidays, & what drugs are you on?

Amazing amount of responses—wow! Thank you everyone for providing your honest appraisal of the USA. Perhaps it’s time to #AmendTheSecondAmendment

Religions are toxic because they create artificial reasons for conflict. Imagine all the people who would like each other, trust each other, & peacefully coexist if it weren’t for religious cults indoctrinating them to believe nonsense.
  • user avatar
Do you believe extra-terrestrial life exists?
  • user avatar
This is just one reason religious cults are dangerous: followers are indoctrinated to believe they’re morally superior to other people. Instead of judging individuals by the content of their character, they assume outsiders are inferior to them.

A religious person assuming atheists must not have a sense of meaning in life or do good in the world is like an alcoholic assuming someone who doesn’t drink must not have a way to cope with life’s problems. There are many ways to derive positive meaning & inspiration in life.

Atheist is nothing more than a label that shouldn’t have to exist, for the same reasons we don’t have a label for people who don’t believe in werewolves, mermaids, or ghosts.

Can we finally retire the phrase “lost my virginity” please? When we have sex for the first time, we don’t lose anything, just like we don’t lose something the first time we kiss someone romantically. The concept was invented by puritanical religions for nefarious reasons.

Every religious cult believes the other religions are “cults”, or at the very least, “misled”. Atheists and non-religious people recognize they’re all cults.
