"I'm not a Catholic, but I played one once in the movies."
Whoopi: "The archbishop of San Francisco is calling for speaker Nancy Pelosi to be denied receiving Communion because of her pro-choice stance ... this is not your job, dude. That is not up to you to make that decision."

For every one thing worth cheering about Amy Coney Barrett's apparent nomination, there are ten things worth praying for. We should take the time to do so. Beginning tomorrow, she and her family will face principalities and powers that most of us won't ever encounter. #PrayforAmy

We deserved neither of them, yet we got them both. God’s grace really is gratuitous.

I'm 18 years a priest today. "Holy Father, who by no merit of my own chose me for communion with the eternal priesthood of your Christ and for the ministry of your Church, grant that I may be an ardent yet gentle preacher of the Gospel and a faithful steward of your mysteries."

“Canceling Mass” does not accurately describe what dioceses are doing in response to the COVID-19 threat. Mass will continue to be said daily by priests everywhere. The bishops have simply asked priests not to celebrate Mass publicly, so as to protect the faithful from infection.

After 19 years of experience I can tell you, offering Mass never gets old.

Miss this guy so much. But he’s doing much more for us now in heaven than he ever did on earth. Pope St. John Paul II, pray for us!

If the sanctuary can be secured, even if just for himself, the archbishop of Paris should celebrate Mass in the cathedral on Easter Sunday morning.

If God can take a grumpy old man (St. Jerome) and a bratty French girl (St. Thérèse) and make them both Doctors of his Church, imagine what he might do with us, who temperamentally are probably somewhere between a sharp-tongued curmudgeon and an insufferable daddy’s girl.

Christmas was yesterday. Today is Sunday. Go to Mass.

Sitting in an airport bar. A troubled guy walks over and asks if I can pray with him. We say the “Our Father” together. He’s grateful. Minutes later, a waiter who witnessed our prayer grabs my arm and says “Halleuia!” We’ve got problems, but the country is going to be okay.

Were I ever to renounce my vows and abandon the grace of ordination—and make a public spectacle of it—please do not tell me “Praying for you, Father!” or “Wishing you the best!” or “You’re so brave!” Instead, quote the Lord to me: “Do you also wish to go away?” (John 6:67).
