Rep. @DrewDarbyTX is one of those rural Republicans who have so-far blocked @GovAbbott's push for private education subsidies. He tells us this is an "Alamo" moment. He's not retreating. "If I'm here in November, December, January, February, March... nothing changes."

Today, I took the constitutional oath of office to the Texas House of Representatives of the 87th Legislature. Because I tested positive for COVID-19, and am nearing the end of my DSHS recommended quarantine period, I was unable to attend the opening day ceremony in person. 1/2

Glad to sign on to this letter asking for STAAR to be canceled for ‘20-‘21. Teachers and students are doing their best under the circumstances, and shouldn’t be penalized by testing that will not accurately reflect the quality of their education. #txlege #txed
This AM, I sent a bipartisan letter to the TEA requesting that TX seek the federal waivers necessary to cancel the STAAR test. At most, STAAR should only be used as a diagnostic tool, as opposed to determine sanctions under the A-F accountability system. #txlege
