Excited to share that I found out I will be promoted to full professor at Mayo Clinic!! As a woman in medicine, this news is a meaningful step in breaking barriers & promoting gender equality in academia & medicine. Grateful for my wonderful mentors and sponsors along the way!!

So proud of myself! After introducing myself as Dr. Strand to a patient, he looked at my name badge and said- oh, so Natalie. Usually I’m stuck feeling afraid to rock the boat... Not today! “Yes, but I go by Dr. Strand at work! “ I finally said it!!!

In a meeting as the only female physician. Made a suggestion, senior colleague dismissed my idea. Male colleage then says the same exact thing, and it is accepted. Second speaker then gave me credit. In front of all, I said thank you for amplifying my voice. #genderbias

👶🏼 No one has asked her how she will balance family & her career 😃 No one has asked her to smile more 💪🏼 No one has asked if she really wants to work this hard 👗 No one has said how lucky she is to be a girl, because she will get a ‘quota’ spot She just gets to dream...

Interrupting your regular Twitter feed to let you know that I have been promoted to Associate Professor!! It is such a milestone achievement for me. I came to Mayo with TWO papers 5 years ago, 6 years out of fellowship, kinda feeing like I missed my chance.

Breaking!! @DrJewelKling has been selected as Dean Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine AZ, & Vice Dean across all Mayo sites!! Only 16% of medical school deans are women!! According to my research, she is the youngest woman to hold a Medical School Dean position in the US!!

Glitch in the @mayoclinic directory- defaulted to the oldest pics of all the staff. Since I did medical school at Mayo, here is what people see when they try to page me now! 22 years old!

It’s never too late to start something new!! I turned 40 in 2018. Didn’t start publishing until 2020. Feeling late to the game stops a lot of people from pursuing their dreams! But we need to remember that is a self imposed limitation! #nevertoolate #getit #chaseyourdreams

I earned a grade of ‘honors’ in a particularly tough rotation in medical school where most people earned ‘high pass’ or ‘pass’. “Must be nice to have boobs” said a male classmate. @womenMDinanesth @WomenSurgeons @physicianwomen @MedWomenWriters @PROWDWomen @AMWADoctors

When I was in high school my dream was to attend Stanford. I applied early, and was flat out rejected. I kept that letter with me for a long time. Next week I am doing a lecture there. One of the professors just said they are “lucky” to have me. I am 🤯😭 Dream come true!!

The more I think about this, the more compelled I am to point it out in the moment. People can’t see their own blind spots.

They say it starts early. She will be conditioned to speak up less, follow more, believe that girls aren’t very good at math, etc. Seeing this photo makes me happy and sad at the same time. You should not have to be 3 to be untouched by harassment, bias, and discrimination.

Does anyone in academic medicine have a flexible work schedule? Specifically, any parents able to take their kids to school before going to work by working at a later start?
